I propose to look at the rising discourse within men’s rights groups about “feminism as the enemy” and argue that men’s rights groups and feminists have a common enemy within the patriarchy. Groups such as Men Going Their Own Way and Incels perpetuate mysoginistic philosophies on the internet and are becoming popular groups for men experiencing the toxic effects of patriarchal masculine standards. In order to understand and fight the rise in violent men’s groups the philosophies of intersectional feminists may be crucial in “selling feminism” to these groups. Margaret Atwood has often been criticized as a bad feminist writer for featuring villainous, cruel women. Atwood has combatted this criticism by pointing out that evil women exist in life, so they should in literature as well. Throughout the first half of twentieth century, the act of smoking transitioned from being an exclusively male to a predominantly female practice. Indeed, by the end of the twentieth century merely being female was considered a serious risk to developing a smoking habit. This cultural shift is reflected in contemporary cigarette advertising, in which women begin as attractive accessories to male smokers and gradually become depicted as smoking independently. Marielle Franco was a Black, Brazilian activist (1979-2018) who rose from the favelas (poor areas) of Rio de Janeiro to be elected as a councilwoman in Rio's election of 2016. Franco was known for exposing the violence waged in the favelas by Brazil's military and police under the "pretense of maintaining law and order," as well as how the militia wields power over those who live in the favelas. In addition to detailing Franco's life, activism and death, this paper also explains the history and development of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the negative attitudes held …
