While some might say that mathematics is neutral, free from political and social bias, social justice concerns can be found in the day-to-day actions of teachers in mathematics classrooms. Teaching mathematics for social justice requires teachers to gain knowledge of the world and systems of oppression as well as current efforts to both address systemic issues as well as the fight for those in power to maintain their cultural capital. The purpose of this research project is to critically map the University of Washington’s institutional practices concerning financial aid and related administrative policies and procedures related to the FAFSA application. This research was conducted by using institutional ethnography as a method to analyze the difficulty of carrying out organizational duties under complex federal, state and institutional policies. It also considers how the process of carrying out these duties creates tensions for staff, and how the unintended consequences of power relations are produced and reproduced between the process of staff carrying out their duties and students receiving aid. A General Student Senate resolution passed last April that encourages student organizations not to associate with the American Red Cross because of accusations of gay discrimination which have caused concern over campus blood drives. The controversy stems from a Food and Drug Administration policy originating in 1983. The policy prohibits all men who have ever had sex with any other man since 1977 from donating blood. Since this time, ·technology has reduced the risk of contracting HIV through blood donations to about one unit per two million donations, according to the Red Cross Web site.

For those of you out of the loop, last month a University of Maine student accepted a Disney scholarship but ran into housing problems when "she" informed them that she was undergoing a sex-change operation. Disney said the student, known as Claire, couldn't room with a male or female in its housing facilities, but gave her the option to pay more money and to live alone. However, she couldn't afford this. In January, a local benefit concert raised over $1,200 for Claire's room and board.

Here is my embarrassing admission for the week: I watched the Miss USA pageant last Sunday. My roommate and I criticized the women, picked our favorites and hoped one of them would trip on stage. We made it through the swimsuit competition, the evening gown walk and held our breaths when the time came for questioning. Miss California, a blonde Barbie® look-alike, took the stage and by the luck of the draw was questioned by Perez Hilton, a gay gossip-queen blogger. He asked her if she believed same-sex marriage should be legalized in every state.

The Maine Attorney General's Office filed a civil suit yesterday against a University of Maine student who allegedly used the FirstClass [email] computer system to make threatening statements directed at gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The suit claims Casey Belanger, 19, of Orono, violated the Maine Civil Rights Act... "Bias motivated threats of violence have absolutely no place anywhere in society, including our universities and colleges," Attorney General Andrew Ketterer said.
