Gender, Race, And Religion In An African Enlightenment, Jonathan D. Lyonhart
Journal of Religion & Film
Black Panther (2018) not only heralded a new future for representation in big-budget films but also gave an alternative vision of the past, one which recasts the Enlightenment within an African context. By going through its technological enlightenment in isolation from Western ideals and dominance, Wakanda opens a space for reflecting on alternate ways progress can—and still might—unfold. More specifically, this alternative history creates room for reimagining how modernity—with its myriad social, scientific, and religious paradigm shifts—could have negotiated questions of race, and, in turn, how race could have informed and redirected some of the lesser impulses of modernity. Towards Women’S Minor Cinema In Socialist Yugoslavia, Dijana Jelaca

This essay theorizes the concept of women’s minor cinema in socialist Yugoslavia, conceptualized through examples of cultural texts that circulate within the so-called women’s genres: romance films, “chick flicks,” and TV soap operas. Women’s cinema is here not defined solely as films made by women, but rather, films that address the spectator as a woman, regardless of the spectator’s sex or gender. I argue that, in the context of Yugoslavia, such works frequently articulated emancipatory, feminist stances that did not demarcate a dichotomous opposition to the socialist state as such, but rather called for the state to fulfill its original …

Epistemic injustice gives a name to experiences that we struggle to articulate due to the injuries of hegemonic speech. This normative grammar seeks to enable social philosophers and activists alike to name experiences of injustice that have not been previously addressed as such. This includes experiences that we cannot make sense of because the society we live in does not provide a vocabulary to make them intelligible or because we are not entitled to give them a name due to our specific identity position, which supposedly disables us from judging matters objectively. The Legal Framework Of Contracting: Gender Equality, The Provision Of Services, And European Public Procurement Law, E.K. Sarter

The article examines the legal framework of public contracting in the EU. It argues that while European public procurement law explicitly allows for measures to foster gender equality be taken into account in public tendering, European legislation and jurisdiction also impose limits to the range of these measures.

Drawing upon five years of ethnographic research with over 100 Denver, Colorado women involved in street‐based sex work and drug use, this paper explores what the women's discursive framings of men who facilitate women's sex work activities reveal about the exclusionary social and criminal justice practices that shape their lives.

Transformational Learning: Influence Of A Sexism And Heterosexism Course On Student Attitudes And Thought Development, Judy Ouellette

The current study investigated whether a course regarding prejudice toward homosexuals and women impacted student attitudes and thought development (compared to a controls). Students completed measures of social dominance, attitudes toward homosexuals and obese persons, and modern sexism. Compared to controls the experimental group had less negative attitudes post course.

L’Intertextualité Géopolitique Dans Le Petit Chat Est Mort De Fejria Deliba, Sarah B. Buchanan
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In this article, Buchanan examines how Fejria Deliba’s short film, Le petit chat est mort, questions the ideas that conservative members of North African and French communities mobilize to separate themselves from each other. Using theories of intertextuality and geopolitical conscience, Buchanan illustrates how “imagined communities” are always influenced by other national narrations, and how “home” is never isolated, pure or preserved. On the contrary, Buchanan highlights how Deliba presents the French and North African cultures as spaces of intersection and interface, that is, of intertext.

"The patriarchal nature of African societies continues to shape women’s sexual behavior in the region. This in turn accounts for the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among women in sub-Saharan Africa. Of the several factors implicated in the unequal prevalence of the disease among women in Africa, economic dependency/feminization of poverty, unequal distribution of sexual power (sexual violence and coercion), limited educational opportunities and lack of political will continue to dominate the literature (Robinson, 2004; Dunkle, et al., 2004; Martin and Curtis, 2004; Eaton, et al., 2003; Mill and Anarfi, 2002). In this paper, I examine the transnational stories of two women --one born in France of Algerian descent and the other born in the United States of Mexican descent-- whose lives are interrupted by the inability to understand their status as ethnic women in the country of their birth. By analyzing their works in the proper socio-historical context and by defining how they fit into a relatively new mode of expression --the autoethnography-- I establish a transnational dialogue between the works of these two women. In this article, the authors use two qualitative studies to address transnationalism in the intersection of migration, gender and health promotion studies. The experiences of women who have recently (less than 3 years ago) immigrated to Canada are examined focusing on their transnational health promotion activities. Despite the invisibility of women’s unpaid work in transnational and migration studies, we argue that the well-being of families, communities and nations is currently being produced in local, national, and international networks of health promotion and care giving and by the wealth generated by women’s labour. The United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDG) focus on key social, economic and political issues; gender and environment are just some of the areas noted. What are the lessons learnt from Kenya’s Green Belt Movement (GBM), spearheaded by Wangari Maathai? MDG analysts might benefit from understanding an NGO’s strategies, like GBM. It will be argued that GBM’s consensus movement mobilized urban and rural women around tree planting income-generating activities, consciousness raising, women’s rights, and political empowerment. GBM’s harambee spirit has the potential of replication across the continent.

The question of whether women’s voices can be recovered from the past may sound very old-fashioned to some people, but in the Zimbabwean academic situation, it is still pertinent even after all the advances made in researching women history elsewhere. This is because there is no attempt by historians to grapple with the absence of women voices in mainstream narratives of pre-colonial history of Zimbabwe. This paper examines the essential role that the Internet has played in mobilizing a transnational feminist response to the war on terror. The use of the Internet by the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) and feminists opposed to the war on terror exemplify the power of this technology to give voice to women who have in many different ways been silenced off-line. This timely case study illustrates how crucial the Internet can be to gain international attention regarding human rights abuses, to solicit transnational support, and to provide an international forum for those who are politically disenfranchised. …

Invited And Invented Spaces Of Participation: Neoliberal Citizenship And Feminists' Expanded Notion Of Politics., Faranak Miraftab
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This short conceptual piece calls for a careful rethinking of what feminist scholars have articulated as an expanded notion of politics: the notion that rejects the binary constructs of formal/informal, and demonstrates the significance of community-based activism as an informal arena of politics and citizenship construction. Introducing the interacting and mutually constitutive concepts of “invited” and “invented” spaces of citizenship, this essay urges recognition of the full range of spaces within the informal arena where citizenship is practiced. Mariama Bâ's fiction is situated in the tradition of the speakerly text—the oral tradition of the Senegalese griot women. This paper focuses on Bâ’s nuanced analysis of caste, friendship, fate, and women's relations. Bâ is critical of archaic and misogynist traditional practices and in her writing she expresses a hope for a positive construction of the Wolof world view.
