Edwin Fischer And Bach Performance Practice Of The Weimar Republic, Bradley V. Brookshire Sep 2016

Edwin Fischer And Bach Performance Practice Of The Weimar Republic, Bradley V. Brookshire

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Edwin Fischer (1886-1960) provided a synthesis of approaches to Bach pianism that resolved dialectical tensions of long standing between schools that opposed one another throughout the nineteenth century. I argue that Fischer’s synthesis––which permits exegetical interpretation while maintaining a preservationist stance toward the integrity of the text––resembles both Felix Mendelssohn’s bifurcated approach to Bach’s music and Moses Mendelssohn’s description of a similar duality within modern Judaism. Such resemblance may not be coincidental or superficial, given that Fischer married into the Mendelssohn family at the height of its cultural influence in Weimar-Era Berlin. Although pieces ...

Molded From Clay: The Portrayal Of Jews Through The Golem In Yudel Rosenberg’S The Golem And The Wondrous Deeds Of The Maharal Of Prague And Gustav Meyrink’S Der Golem, Reynolds Nelson Hahamovitch

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines and compares Yudel Rosenberg’s The Golem and the Wondrous Deeds of the Maharal (1909) and Gustav Meyrink’s Der Golem (1915). This thesis pays particular attention to how Rosenberg and Meyrink bind the Golem legend to the portrayal of the Jew in contemporary Jewish and non-Jewish discourses. Spectral Liberalism: On The Subjects Of Political Economy In Moscow, Adam Leeds

Publicly Accessible Penn Dissertations

The world since 1989 has appeared to many as the “end of history,” a uniform “neoliberalism” underpinned by abstract economic theories. This dissertation, based on two years of fieldwork in among the economists of Moscow (2010–2012), brings the tools of science studies to the social sciences, building on studies of the co-constitution of objects and rationalities of rule to take seriously the local lives of mathematical economics as culture. I offer an approach to the production of liberal political modernity through unpacking how economic knowledge contributes to assembling the object it claims to study—“the economy.” In creating disciplinary ...

La France Et Le Plurilinguisme: Deux Opposés Qui S'Attirent? Une Étude De L'Enseignement Et De L'Apprentissage Des Langues Étrangères En France., Rachel L. Lorch

Senior Independent Study Theses
