Juan Manuel, one of the most distinguished men of his age, was constantly engaged in rebellions and civil wars but, nevertheless, somehow managed to leave to posterity several literary works of considerable importance. He succeeded in making didacticism alive and personal in El Conde Lucanor. He is a prince writing to edify and instruct the people, a man of the world with a keen insight into human character.
