A Retelling Within A Myth Retold: The Priest Of Essur And Lewisian Mythopoetics, Peter J. Schakel

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Asks why Lewis felt the myth of Cupid and Psyche needed to be retold. The story told by the Priest of Essur is a “middle step” between the original myth and Lewis’s recasting of it, in which the incomplete pagan notion of sacrifice gives way to the fullness of that theme in Christianity.

Isabel's Sexual Drama, Barbara Pinson Dec 1983

Isabel's Sexual Drama, Barbara Pinson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Henry James, Jr. (1843-1916) has had a greater impact on the world of the novel than any other writer. The greatest controversy surrounding this most prolific of American authors and critics Concerns the area of sexual passion. The most insidious criticism leveled against James is that he and his characters lack sexuality. The whole problem is epitomized in this perusal of the sexual consciousness of Isabel Archer Osmond, the famous heroine in The Portrait of a Lady. While many critics simply ignore Isabel's sexuality, many others are less discerning than they should be, and some are absolutely mistaken: they …

Rediscovering James T. Farrell, Charles Fanning Oct 1983

Rediscovering James T. Farrell, Charles Fanning

Bridgewater Review

No major American writer has been worse served by criticism than James T. Farrell. After the publication in 1935 of his first fictional series, the Studs Lonigan trilogy, Farrell labored for four decades under an unjust and unfounded critical accusation. During these years, many influential critics dealt with his fiction as it appeared by mechanical citation of a party line which ran as follows: "James T. Farrell is that sad case, a one-book writer. Studs Lonigan is credible fiction, albeit in the limiting and dated naturalistic mode pioneered by Theodore Dreiser. But his subsequent novels have been obsessive reworkings of …

Blake, Hegel And Dialectic [Review], Michael Fischer Oct 1983

Blake, Hegel And Dialectic [Review], Michael Fischer

English Faculty Research

According to David Punter, "Blake's dialectic and Hegel's share a number of crucial features" (p. 11), making Hegel's Phenomenology the "closest parallel to [Blake's] work" (p. 17). By emphasizing progression through contraries, both Blake and Hegel transform the dialectical tradition that they presumably inherit from Heraclitus, Giordano Bruno, and Jakob Böhme, all of whom Punter analyzes in his opening chapter. Subsequent chapters trace the similarities that Punter finds among such works as the Phenomenology, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and The Four Zoas. Although Punter calls his comparison of Blake and Hegel "important and fruitful" (p. …
