Korean-American Elders In Independent Living Arrangements, Shinok Lee
Korean-American Elders In Independent Living Arrangements, Shinok Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Many Korean-American elders in America are new immigrants who are faced with cultural change and adjustment problems. In recent years, these Korean-American elders have been undergoing a change in their living situation by moving away from their adult children into independent living arrangements. This study draws on a sample of 50 Korean-American elders in subsidized housing who are over the age of sixty and live in the Portland, Oregon Metropolitan area to investigate factors involved in their choice of and their well-being in independent living arrangements. Through interviews, the study specifically gives attention to why the elders moved, whether they …

A Case Study Of Twelve Japanese Esl Students' Use Of Interaction Modifications, Darin Dooley
Dissertations and Theses
This case study examines Japanese ESL students' use of interaction modifications in a content based course. Twelve female subjects were observed and recorded during a nine week period. Their use of interaction modifications (clarification requests, confirmation checks, and comprehension checks) and responses to interaction modifications (single word, full or partial repetition, or reformulation), during teacher-fronted and small group situations, were recorded and coded using the COLT observation instrument.
The study found that the subjects used clarification requests over four times more often in small group or pair-work situations than in teacher-fronted classes. Also, the subjects used confirmation checks over five …

Through The Ocean Waves: The Autobiography Of Bazaryn Shirendev, B. (Bazaryn) ShirėNdėV
Through The Ocean Waves: The Autobiography Of Bazaryn Shirendev, B. (Bazaryn) ShirėNdėV
East Asian Studies Press
The translation of Shirendev’s Through the Ocean Waves is a significant event for the historical understanding of modem Mongolia. This is the first personal biography by a central figure in the communist government that dominated the entire central part of the twentieth century. Shirendev is a remarkable statesman. The peaks and troughs of his career, alluded to in his title, reveal the inner turbulence of the history of his country, which was largely hidden until recently. Since 1990 Mongolia has changed direction politically, turning towards democracy, market relations and openness in public life. The publication of Shirendev s book in …

回味與審視 : 談"衣食散文", Wai Ying Chan

Potential Technology Application In English Instruction In The People's Republic Of China, Ping Gao
Potential Technology Application In English Instruction In The People's Republic Of China, Ping Gao
Graduate Research Papers
The primary purpose of this paper is to present a vision of potential technology application as an effective teaching aid for English instruction in the People's Republic of China (hereafter referred to as China). In order to provide a clear picture of why technology should be applied in English teaching situations in China, major factors influencing the current English teaching methodologies – grammar translation and audiolingual method – have been analyzed. A theoretical analysis of modern Western teaching pedagogy, the communicative approach, has been explored to offer an in-depth understanding of foreign language learning and teaching processes. The close relationship …

Australia As Other In Singapore's Media, Lai W. Woo
Australia As Other In Singapore's Media, Lai W. Woo
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Since the late eighteenth century, the Western observation of the East has been based on shared ontological and epistemological assumptions made by the West of the East as different and as the "Other''. Said's concept of Orientalism revolutionized Western understanding of non-Western cultures by showing how Western projected images shaped the Occidental view of the Orient. Although much has been written about the West's perception of the East as "Other'' (Eg. Said and Schirato), to date, little has been written dealing with the West from, the "Eastern" viewpoint. This thesis will examine the concepts of Orientalism (the perception of the …
Code-Switching Amongst Simalungun-Indonesian Bilinguals, Sylvia Saragih
Code-Switching Amongst Simalungun-Indonesian Bilinguals, Sylvia Saragih
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study investigates code-switching within a bilingual speech community. The languages used in this community are Indonesian, the national language 9f Indonesia, and Simalungun, one of the regional languages spoken in North Sumatra. Conversations amongst young bilinguals with balanced competence in both languages were recorded and passages containing examples of code-switching were transcribed for analysis. It was found that the base language of interaction was Simalungun, but that code-switching into Indonesian occurred in all conversations recorded. Analysis of the language data collected led to the conclusion that code-switching was used by the speakers in different ways. Indonesian loans were used …
