“China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory” deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a “greener,” healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.

This dissertation presents an overview of interpreting during the Korean War by examining shifts in the positionality of interpreters during the preparatory, engagement, and conclusionary stages of the conflict. Here, the preparatory stage refers to the U.S. military occupation of south Korea (1945-1948), the engagement stage refers to period of active military engagement between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and its allies against the Republic of Korea and the United Nations Command (1950-1953), while the conclusionary stage refers to the Korean Armistice Negotiations (1951-1953). Maya Abu al-Hayyat (born 1980) is a Palestinian poet who thematizes motherhood, love, war/revolution, grief, and political hypocrisy in her poetry. In the context of Palestinian literature, she fits within a tradition of Resistance Literature, yet redefines it. Given that al-Hayyat has not been widely translated into English, this thesis presents 33 translations of her poems taken from her three poetry collections: Mā qālathu fīhī (Thus Spake the Beloved, 2007), Tilka al-ibtisāma-- dhālika al-qalb (This Smile, That Heart, 2012), and Fasātīn baytīyya wa ḥurūb (House Dresses and Wars, 2016). This thesis focuses on the question of translator roles in literary theory. I characterize these roles between positions that have traditionally been described by literary and philosophical theorists such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault. The overall purpose of this analysis was to exemplify the parallels between the governmental responses to the Tlatelolco Massacre of 1968 and the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020. “Memorial de Tlatelolco” is a poem that was written by Mexican poet and activist, Rosario Castellanos in 1968 following the Tlatelolco Massacre. The findings of this research note the familiarity instilled in those suffering through the COVID-19 Pandemic by Castellanos' poem.

In this paper, I explore the work of the American Sign Language-English interpreters who volunteered in the 1988 Deaf President Now protest (DPN). Drawing from the construct of ideologically-structured action (Dalton 1994; Zald 2000), I frame the interpreters’ decisionmaking throughout the protest, showing how their beliefs about and relationships with deaf people shaped their actions. Further, I argue that the activist interpreters exhibited a collective identity (Polletta and Jasper 2001) with the deaf protesters, despite not being deaf themselves. I also discuss the integral role of interpreters to the protesters’ mission of challenging the existing power structure. To develop my …

In the 1940s José María Arguedas and Francisco Izquierdo Ríos collected oral tradition stories from three separate geographical areas of Peru. The publication of these legends, myths and Peruvian tales (Mitos, leyendas y cuentos peruanos 1947) and its function as an historical record of cultural and national identity led Arguedas to national acclaim. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอาง รวมถึงศึกษากลวิธีการถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์จากต้นฉบับไปยังฉบับแปล การวิจัยนี้รวบรวมข้อมูลผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องสำอางในกลุ่มผลิตภัณฑ์บำรุงผิวและเครื่องสำอางสำหรับตกแต่งทั้งหมด 240 ผลิตภัณฑ์จากเว็บไซต์ตราสินค้าที่มีทั้งภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษ ผู้วิจัยศึกษาแนวคิดอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชานของ Lakoff และ Johnson (2003) แนวทางการระบุรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์จากกลุ่มนักวิชาการ Pragglejaz Group (2007) และการจัดประเภทกลุ่มคำศัพท์ตามวงความหมายจากงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในตัวบทประเภทต่าง ๆ รวมถึงการศึกษาลักษณะภาษาโฆษณาและประเภทอุปลักษณ์ที่พบในโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางในภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย และจากการศึกษาแนวทางการแปลอุปลักษณ์ตามแนวคิดแบบดั้งเดิมและตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์ปริชาน ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้กรอบการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลที่ผสมผสานกันของ Deignan et al. (1997) Schäffner (2004) และ Toury (1995) ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางภาษาอังกฤษที่คัดเลือกมามีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 29 ประเภท มีจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,391 ตัวอย่าง ผู้วิจัยเลือกอุปลักษณ์ที่พบสูงสุดใน 10 อันดับแรก ได้แก่ อุปลักษณ์สงคราม แสง มนุษย์ สุขภาพ พืชและการเพาะปลูก สิ่งทอและเครื่องนุ่งห่ม เครื่องจักร ศิลปะ อาหารและโภชนาการ และภาชนะ ซึ่งจำนวนรูปภาษาที่แสดงอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมด 1,166 ตัวอย่าง นำมาวิเคราะห์อุปลักษณ์ที่พบในฉบับแปลและกลวิธีการแปล พบว่าภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษมีอุปลักษณ์ทั้งหมดนี้เหมือนกัน ผลการวิเคราะห์กลวิธีการแปลเป็นไปตามสมมติฐานที่ตั้งไว้ กล่าวคือ พบว่ากลวิธีการแปลที่พบมากที่สุดคือ 1) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม แต่รูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ต่างจากต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 51.41 ตามด้วย 2) การแปลโดยรักษามโนทัศน์เดิม และรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์ตรงตามต้นฉบับ ร้อยละ 26.90 3) การแปลโดยไม่รักษามโนทัศน์ (ไม่มีรูปภาษาแสดงอุปลักษณ์) ร้อยละ 12.93 4) การแปลโดยใช้มโนทัศน์ที่แตกต่างกัน ร้อยละ 4.62 และ 5) การละไม่แปล ร้อยละ 4.11 นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่ามีการเพิ่มมโนทัศน์ที่ไม่ปรากฏในต้นฉบับเข้ามาในฉบับแปลด้วย โดยสรุป การถ่ายทอดอุปลักษณ์เชิง มโนทัศน์ในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอางจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทแทบไม่พบปัญหาในการแปลที่มาจากปัจจัยทางวัฒนธรรมซึ่งอาจเป็นเพราะวัฒนธรรมปลายทางรับค่านิยมและวัฒนธรรมจากต่างชาติโดยเฉพาะเรื่องความงามมาอย่างยาวนาน จึงสามารถรักษามโนทัศน์เดิมในต้นฉบับได้เป็นส่วนใหญ่ ส่วนกลวิธีการแปลอื่น ๆ แสดงให้เห็นการปรับบทแปลในตัวบทโฆษณาเครื่องสำอาง

Alfred Prufrock” โดย ที.เอส. เอเลียต จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการศึกษาค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับแนวคิดสมัยใหม่นิยมในบริบทของโลกตะวันตกและบทวิเคราะห์ต่าง ๆ เกี่ยวกับการประพันธ์กวีนิพนธ์ของที.เอส. เอเลียต เพื่อนำมาใช้เป็น แนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท พร้อมทั้งศึกษาแนวคิดสมัยใหม่นิยมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการประพันธ์ กวีนิพนธ์ในประเทศไทย แนวทางการประพันธ์กวีนิพนธ์ของกวีไทยร่วมสมัย ตลอดจนทฤษฎีการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ แนวทางการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของฟรานซิส อาร์. โจนส์ (Francis R. Jones) รวมถึงแนวคิดเรื่องสัมพันธบท (Intertextuality) และกลวิธีการแปลของลอว์เรนซ์ เวนูติ (Lawrence Venuti) เพื่อนำมาใช้เป็นแนวทางในการแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมอันเป็นแนวคิดสำคัญของกวีนิพนธ์เรื่องนี้ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแปลเพื่อถ่ายทอดความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมอันเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของสารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ ทำได้ด้วยการวิเคราะห์และสังเคราะห์คุณลักษณะต่าง ๆ ที่สะท้อนความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมภายในตัวบทต้นฉบับ โดยประยุกต์ใช้โครงสร้างกวีนิพนธ์แบบผิดแผกจาก ขนบของกวีไทยในยุคร่วมสมัย และให้ความสำคัญกับความหมายเป็นหลัก ซึ่งสามารถสะท้อนความเป็นสมัยใหม่นิยมที่ตั้งคำถามต่อขนบ ทั้งยังช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาในการวิจัย และนำไปสู่บทแปลที่สามารถสะท้อนตัวบทต้นฉบับได้อย่างใกล้เคียง

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลบุคคลวัตและอุปลักษณ์ ในบทกวีนิพนธ์ เรื่อง Il Penseroso จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้นำทฤษฎีการกระทำการแปลของคริสติอันเน นอร์ด ทฤษฎีสโคโพสของคาทารินา ไรส์และฮานส์ แฟร์เมีย หลักการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของอองเดร เลอเฟอแวร์ หลักการแปลกวีนิพนธ์และหลักการแปลอุปมาโวหารของสัญฉวี สายบัว หลักการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของปราณี บานชื่น และงานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องมาใช้เป็นแนวทางการแปลเพื่อรักษาสุนทรียภาพและความหมายเดิมในตัวบทต้นฉบับ และถ่ายทอดการใช้ภาพพจน์ที่สะท้อนความเชื่อและความสามารถทางกวีนิพนธ์ของกวี ผลการวิจัยพบว่า การแปลบุคคลวัตและอุปลักษณ์ซึ่งเป็นเป้าหมายหลักของสารนิพนธ์จำเป็นต้องใช้แนวทางการแปลมากกว่าหนึ่งแนวทางเพื่อให้การแปลสัมฤทธิ์ผล โดยในการแปลบุคคลวัตด้านธรรมชาติสามารถใช้การแปลแบบตรงตัวได้ แต่ในการแปลบุคคลวัตด้านวรรณคดีจำเป็นต้องใช้การแปลแบบกึ่งตรงตัวควบคู่ไปกับการแปลเทียบเคียงและการขยายความเพื่อความเข้าใจของผู้อ่าน โดยแนวทางการแปลที่กล่าวถึงนี้สามารถรักษาสุนทรียภาพและความหมายเดิมในตัวบทต้นฉบับไว้ได้ และช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาการแปลจนนำไปสู่การถ่ายทอดการใช้ภาพพจน์ตามต้นฉบับได้อย่างใกล้เคียง

สารนิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อแปลหนังสือนิทานร้อยกรองสำหรับเด็กเรื่อง The Everywhere Bear ของ จูเลีย โดนัลด์สัน จากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ต้นฉบับเป็นตัวบทสื่อผสมระหว่างเนื้อความกับภาพประกอบซึ่งไม่สามารถแยกเป็นเอกเทศได้ ผู้วิจัยจึงศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลที่เกี่ยวข้องโดยกำหนดแนวทางการแปลเป็นแบบสื่อสารความหมาย ประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางการแปลบทร้อยกรองของเลอเฟอแวร์ วิเคราะห์ตัวบทที่มีสื่อผสมหลายรูปแบบตามแนวคิดของนอร์ดและดิเซอร์โต ประยุกต์ใช้ทฤษฎีความเกี่ยวเนื่องของกุตต์ และทฤษฎีการสื่อสารรูปแบบผสมของเครสในการแก้ปัญหาการแปล สารนิพนธ์นี้มุ่งเน้นเสนอวิธีการแปลเพื่อสื่อความหมาย ดังนั้นทุกองค์ประกอบในสารนิพนธ์ ตั้งแต่การกำหนดแนวทางการแปล การวิเคราะห์ตัวบทต้นฉบับ การแปลตัวบท จนถึงการแก้ปัญหาการแปล ดำเนินไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ความรู้ ทฤษฎี และแนวคิดต่าง ๆ ดังกล่าวข้างต้นช่วยให้ผู้วิจัยเข้าใจต้นฉบับ แก้ปัญหาการแปล และแปลตัวบทออกมาเป็นบทร้อยกรองภาษาไทยได้อย่างเหมาะสมและมีความสอดคล้องกันระหว่างบทแปลภาษาไทยกับภาพมากที่สุด

สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มุ่งศึกษาการแปลบทร้อยกรองจากภาษาต่างประเทศเป็นภาษาไทย ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้หยิบยกบทร้อยกรองอิสระจากหนังสือเรื่อง Ceremony ของ Leslie Marmon Silko มาเป็นกรณีศึกษา โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาทฤษฎีการแปลและแนวทางการแปลต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ตลอดจนแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบทประเภทบทร้อยกรองอิสระซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นวรรณกรรมมุขปาฐะ ควบคู่ไปกับการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ วัฒนธรรม ภาษาถิ่นและความเชื่อของชนพื้นเมืองอเมริกันอินเดียน เพื่อให้สามารถแปลส่วนหนึ่งของตัวบทที่คัดสรรจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทยได้อย่างเหมาะสม สำหรับแนวทางการวิเคราะห์ตัวบท ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้แนวทางการวิจารณ์วรรณกรรมอเมริกันร่วมสมัยผ่านมุมมองวรรณกรรมเชิงนิเวศ ของดารินทร์ ประดิษฐทัศนีย์ เพื่อวิเคราะห์ประเด็นปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมถึงความสัมพันธ์ของมนุษย์และธรรมชาติที่ได้ถ่ายทอดผ่านเนื้อหาและกลวิธีการประพันธ์ นอกเหนือจากนั้น ผู้วิจัยยังได้ใช้ประยุกต์ใช้แนวทางการวิเคราะห์องค์ประกอบแปดประการของกวีนิพนธ์ ของจอห์น แมกเร เพื่อวิเคราะห์ลักษณะเฉพาะและรูปแบบการประพันธ์ของบทร้อยกรองแต่ละบท ในส่วนของแนวทางการถ่ายทอดบทร้อยกรองอิสระจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย ผู้วิจัยได้เลือกใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบตีความตามแนวทางการแปลกวีนิพนธ์ของอังเดร เลอเฟอแวร์ ควบคู่ไปกับการประยุกต์ใช้รูปแบบและลักษณะเฉพาะของวรรณกรรมมุขปาฐะที่พบในวัฒนธรรมไทย โดยมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะถ่ายทอดบทร้อยกรองอิสระซึ่งสามารถรักษาความหมายได้อย่างครบถ้วนและสามารถสร้างผลกระทบทางอารมณ์แก่ผู้อ่านได้อย่างทัดเทียมและสอดคล้องกับหน้าที่ของตัวบทต้นฉบับ

สารนิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มุ่งหาแนวทางการแปลมนต์คาถาซึ่งเป็นศิลปะการเล่นทางภาษาแบบร่ายกลับหลังและพาลินโดรมในนิยายภาพเรื่อง ซาแทนน่า (Zatanna) ของ พอล ดินี (Paul Dini) ผู้วิจัยได้เสนอแนวทางการแปลไว้ 3 แนวทาง ได้แก่ 1. การประยุกต์ใช้แนวคิดเรื่องขนบการแปลของ กิเดียน ทูรี (Gideon Toury) ร่วมกับทฤษฎีวัจนกรรมของ เจ. แอล. ออสติน (J. L. Austin) และกระบวนการภารตานุวาทของ อัสนี พูลรักษ์ เพื่อเป็นแนวทางที่จะทำให้ผู้อ่านบทแปลภาษาไทยยอมรับได้ตามขนบภาษาเวทมนตร์ของไทย 2. การประยุกต์ใช้ทฤษฎีประเด็นสัมพันธ์ของ เออร์เนสต์ ออกัส กัตต์ (Ernest – August Gutt) ร่วมกับกลวิธีการแปลการเล่นคำของ เดิร์ก เดอลาบาสติตา (Dirk Delabastita) เพื่อทดแทนการเล่นทางภาษาของต้นฉบับและสร้างผลลัพธ์ที่ใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับมากที่สุดทั้งในแง่ของความหมายและการเล่นทางภาษา ซึ่งศิลปะการเล่นทางภาษาของไทยที่ผู้วิจัยเลือกใช้ คือ การเล่นคำผวนและฉันทลักษณ์ของกลบท และ 3. การปรับใช้กลวิธีการแปลการ์ตูนของ มิฮาล โบโดโร (Michal Borodo) เพื่อถ่ายทอดเนื้อหาและวัจนลีลาของต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษออกมาเป็นบทแปลภาษาไทยได้อย่างสมจริงที่สุด ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การใช้คำยืมภาษาบาลีและภาษาสันสกฤตตามกระบวนการภารตานุวาทสามารถช่วยยกระดับภาษาของมนต์คาถาให้มีความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ตามขนบการใช้ภาษาเวทมนตร์ของไทย การเล่นคำผวนและฉันทลักษณ์ของกลบทเป็นกลวิธีที่สามารถสร้าง ผลลัพธ์ (Effect) ที่มีความใกล้เคียงกับต้นฉบับมากที่สุดและเป็นการเล่นคำที่ผู้ใช้ภาษาไทยส่วนใหญ่คุ้นเคย จึงไม่ต้องใช้ความพยายามในการทำความเข้าใจ (Effort) เกินความจำเป็น และการปรับใช้กลวิธีการแปลการ์ตูน ซึ่งประกอบด้วย การแปลแบบเพิ่ม (Addition) การแปลแบบลด (Condensation) และการแปลแบบแปลง (Transformation) ก็เป็นประโยชน์ต่อการแปลมนต์คาถาและข้อความทั้งหลายเช่นกัน
