Review Of Fauvel. The First Archaeologist In Athens And His Philhellenic Correspondents, By C. W. Clairmont, Effie Athanassopoulos
Review Of Fauvel. The First Archaeologist In Athens And His Philhellenic Correspondents, By C. W. Clairmont, Effie Athanassopoulos
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Clairmont’s book is a selection of letters addressed to Louis-François-Sébastien Fauvel, the French Consul and antiquarian, who lived in Athens from 1803 to 1822. Fauvel came to Greece for the first time in 1780. He was sent to the Orient by Count Choiseul-Gouffier in order to study, draw and acquire antiquities for Choiseul’s collection. In 1784 Choiseul-Gouffier was appointed Ambassador in Constantinople and Fauvel continued his activities as a member of Choiseul’s retinue until 1792. Subsequently, Fauvel held the position of French Consul in Athens from 1802 until 1833. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Fauvel left Athens …
A Reconsideration Of The Apse Of Hagia Eirene., Eston Adams 1979-
A Reconsideration Of The Apse Of Hagia Eirene., Eston Adams 1979-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The mosaic of the cross in the apse of Hagia Eirene in Constantinople is examined in order to determine the imperial patron responsible for it's construction. Key points in this study are Orthodox image veneration, Iconoclast doctrine and the events of the era of Byzantine iconoclasm (726-843 C. E.). Supplementing the written evidence is a study of the architecture of Hagia Eirene and what it reveals about the date of the apse mosaic's construction. Other important monuments discussed in comparison with the mosaic in Hagia Eirene include the apse of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki and the now destroyed apse of …
The Effect Of Misogyny On The Persecution Of Women As Practitioners Of Magic In Ancient Greece, Rome, Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Mark J. Mangione
The Effect Of Misogyny On The Persecution Of Women As Practitioners Of Magic In Ancient Greece, Rome, Medieval And Early Modern Europe, Mark J. Mangione
Honors Bachelor of Arts
This paper will look at the history of magic from the time of the ancient Greeks, to its development and integration into the culture of the Romans, and finally its evolution, downfall, and outlawing in the Medieval and Early Modern Europe. More specifically, this paper intends to focus upon the gender of practitioners of magic. There is a discrepancy between classical literature and non-literary sources of who actually were practitioners of magic. Women prevail as practitioners in Greek and Roman literature but non-literary sources say that men too were practitioners of magic. Glimpses of misogynistic thoughts can be found in …
Distortions In The Historical Record Concerning Ager Publicus, Leges Agrariae, And The Gracchi, Maria Therese Jeffrey
Distortions In The Historical Record Concerning Ager Publicus, Leges Agrariae, And The Gracchi, Maria Therese Jeffrey
Honors Bachelor of Arts
In this thesis, I examine some tales of the earliest leges agrariae as reported by Livy and Dionysus because the motifs they employ in telling these stories are seen in the Gracchan tales as well. In addition, no discussion of the Gracchi is complete without some consideration of what kind of land they aimed to redistribute and who would benefit. Plutarch and Appian do not go into detail about ager publicus or previous leges agrariae and secondary scholars might unconsciously ignore them in turn. Therefore, I examine ager publicus and leges agrariae for a fuller understanding of the importance of …

A Comparison Of Ancient Mediterranean Metal Structural Fittings, Evan Galen Sharp
A Comparison Of Ancient Mediterranean Metal Structural Fittings, Evan Galen Sharp
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The construction of shelter is one of the basic activities that allows humans to survive. It is, moreover, one of the principal means by which we identify the occupation of a place by peoples who came before us. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean, methods and techniques flowed among populations as readily as any other commodity, and their manifestations bear witness to cultural contact as much as any transported religious, commercial, or military object. Moreover, since the construction of shelter is an activity common to all, functional techniques were a universally sharable knowledge. A collection and comparison of the …
