Review Of: Aspect In Mandarin Chinese: A Corpus-Based Study, Edward J. Vajda

The authors of this study pursue two goals. Citing examples from a large corpus of texts rather than relying primarily on native-speaker intuitions, they provide a fine-grained account of how aspect operates on both the lexical and sentential levels in contemporary Mandarin Chinese. Based on this description, they propose a number of refinements to currently existing general theories of aspect. The accompanying discussion revisits such important issues as the difference between aspect and Aktionsart, situation aspect vs. viewpoint aspect, contextual levels of analysis, and the notion of time vs. space in definitions of event boundedness.

This paper examines spiritual beliefs and practices in the Hakka Malaysian community of Pulai, focusing on the pantheon of deities and spirits worshipped and propitiated; the system of local beliefs in the power and efficacy of these deities; and the manner in which individuals and families have reproduced and altered these spiritual beliefs over time. Unlike my previous writings about religion in Pulai, which have emphasized the sociological components of local religion practices, my goal here is to explore the cosmological system, world view, and system of meanings conveyed through religious practices in this Hakka village.

唐滌生於一九五四至一九五九年間，多次改編古典文學作品，推敲增刪，把經典轉化為另一部經典。戲曲早已是中國文學中不能或缺的一部份，而粵劇作為戲曲文學的一員，當中亦不乏傳世佳作。適逢五、六十年代是香港粵劇的鼎盛之年，既造就唐滌生編劇之能，唐滌生也以劇作的文學價值成就粵劇。

本文以道德教化作討論軸心，探勘唐滌生如何改編古典名著。第一章導言， 先論改編作品的價值及釐清本文方向，繼而按劇分章論述其改編之法；第二章以主題的轉換探討唐滌生如何改編《牡丹亭》成《牡丹亭驚夢》；第三章是〈《琵 琶記》：天人不甚感應〉，研讀唐滌生對傳統理念的存疑及更動；第四章以敘事結構的改換閱讀《六月雪》；第五章：〈《帝女花》：隱含的忠孝精神〉，細察唐滌生如何透過寫作手法改寫文本，不動聲色地傳述忠孝精神；人物是劇作家的代言人，模塑兼具個性與感情的人物卻殊不容易，第六章即以此為題開展討論《香 囊記》；第七章以劇作討論的基礎重申改編的價值，並以肯定唐滌生作品的地位作結。

五十年代的香港逐漸出現不同類型的綜合性文化刊物，而由右派機構如友聯出版社所編的一系列學生刊物，對香港以至東南亞一帶的文藝發展有深遠的影響。友聯編輯出版的報刊包括《祖國周刊》、《大學生活》、《中國學生周報》(以下簡稱《周報》)以及《兒童樂園》，儘管它們的編輯方針有不同的取向，但是其中以學生為名的兩份，最初的共同目標都是為流亡於東南亞一帶的中國青年而編，透過文化宣傳凝聚青年力量，並為他們指引「正確」 的升學出路。

本研究以五十年代的《周報》文藝版為例，是由於這段時期最能代表當代香港青年如何受到學生報刊的影響。他們參與學生報刊的園地，其中不同的時期的發展，都能夠體現香港文藝的各種特點。而且《周報》本身的跨地域發展，影響遍及整個東南亞，其代表性更遠超其他學生報刊，對往後種種文化討論提供重要研究資料。

本研究的第一章會先解釋研究概況、方法和範圍，並闡明文藝版的定義。 第二章以宏觀的角度，整理和分析編輯方針與文藝發展的關係。第三章梳理和探討《周報》文藝版如何保存中國傳統文化。第四章則分析不同時期的西方文藝介紹工作，並歸納當中的文藝特質。第五章探討文藝版的學生創作版， 歸納和分析不同時期的文藝風氣。最後第六章是總結，嘗試評定《周報》文藝版的價值和貢獻。

Intercultural Learning Via Instant Messenger Interaction, Li Jin

This paper reports a qualitative study investigating the viability of instant messenger (IM) interaction to facilitate intercultural learning in a foreign language class. Eight students in a Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) class participated in the study. Each student was paired with a native speaker (NS) of Chinese, and each pair collaborated on eight intercultural-learning tasks over a 2-month period through IM. Data were collected through an ethnographic survey, intercultural sensitivity scale, follow-up interviews, the researcher's reflective journal, and participants' IM conversation transcripts. Very few studies focus on how English as a second language (ESL) students’ agency and their unique histories as an integral part of the social cultural environment influence his or her participation in computer-mediated peer response tasks, particularly in a multimedia-based synchronous communication environment. Considering each ESL student as an active agency with unique historical bearings, the dissertation investigated ESL students’ participation in computer-mediated peer response (CMPR) tasks that used instant messenger (IM) as the communication technology between students from the cultural historical activity theoretical (CHAT) perspective, which views all human interaction as a dynamic developmental process.
