Originally marketed towards older adults followed by children, adaptive fashion greatly impacts the everyday independence of all disabled people. The King’s Fashion Reimagined

This was a venture to reimagine the fashion of Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll in the 1970s. Elvis was known for the bold jumpsuits he often wore while performing. His fashion style was reimagined through the lens of upper-class 18th century styles. The 18th century gave us permission to be luxurious. The18th century elements such as the ditto suit and cravat were combined with 1970s jumpsuits and bell bottoms to create a whimsical reimagined collection of stage costumes.

This research investigates why hanfu and qipao represent the nation of China. Previous sources have described the dresses, Chinese history, and Chinese fashion aesthetics, and have questioned why many people wear these dresses today. However, previous studies have not investigated what aspects of hanfu and qipao make both Chinese people and outsiders associate these dresses so strongly with China. Fashion design from Africa and by African designers provides a rich source of information about south-south networks of influence and inspiration. Using several case studies, this article explores the products of cultural interactions between Africa and other world regions, and between cultures within Africa, to illuminate south-south networks of innovation. Case studies include the work of Sakina M’Sa, Maimouna Diallo, and the distinctive embroidery of northern Mali known as “Ghana Boy” style.

Dressing Indian: Appropriation, Identity, And American Design, 1940-1968, Alison Rose Bazylinski

This thesis examines the ways the American fashion industry and fashion publications appropriated aspects of Indian cultures as marketing tools from 1940 to 1968 and the ways representations stereotypes created through fashion outlets denoted American and individual, rather than Native, identity. Representational stereotypes created at the turn of the twentieth century provided fashion merchandisers and sellers with a home-grown marketing scheme, while the development of an American fashion industry based on mass-produced, ready-to-wear sportswear led to nation-wide dissemination and use of "Indian" colors, patterns, and designs.

Consumers who want to express themselves by wearing contemporary clothing styles should not have to choose between expensive brands and counterfeit products. There should be a clear distinction in trademark law between illegal, counterfeit goods and perfectly legal (at least with respect to trademark law) "knockoffs," in which aesthetically functional design attributes have been copied but trademarks have not. Toward that end, as a normative matter, the aesthetic features of products should not be registrable or protectable as trademarks or trade dress, regardless of whether they have secondary meaning, just as functional attributes of a utilitarian nature are not eligible …

MOON GLOW is an eveningwear ensemble inspired by the colors and shapes in a 19th century Japanese wood block print of a moonlit lake and mountains, and by garment style lines from historic Chinese costume. Four fabric colors were used to create the geometric designs on the jacket to reflect the subtle shapes and colors in the picture. The asymmetric pattern on the center front and center back bands is an interpretation of the diagonal shapes of the landscape. 1000 PIECES: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is a wearable art coat incorporating approximately 1000 removable pieces that may be assembled to create a variety of surface designs. The concept is based on a jigsaw puzzle. The aesthetic inspiration came from ancient Chinese armor composed of small metal scales decoratively arranged and affixed to a background fabric. The coat is designed especially for those who enjoy assembling a jigsaw puzzle or creating their own unique designs.

To complement the armor on display in the main gallery and to enhance their educational programs, the Museum commissioned my research, drafting and construction of a collection of renaissance and medieval historic costume reproductions.
