Any verbalization of an artistic statement is by its very nature, an inadequate interpretation. However, I feel there is some merit in a concise declaration of my general concepts in the study. This paper represents a summation of the concepts and directions involved in my studio investigation in painting and drawing.

Specifically, it is within the scope of man's altered and effected perception of reality that I have based the studio research.

This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. A play or conflict was set up between these two things; the success of the play determined the success of the painting. The factors used to judge success are basically those classical rules of composition dealing with balance: visual weight of areas, complexity, and color. The thesis problem involved the investigation of figure-ground relationships in painting. This study dealt with varying experiments in space, color relationships, the juxtaposition of form, and value relationships. The media used were those common to oil, watercolor and drawing. The investigation entailed the development of form and space relationships in a series of paintings. The study included a critical evaluation regarding achievement of the expressive aims, and the conclusions drawn from individual paintings, as well as from the series. The fundamental locus lay within the figure-ground relationship and that has been the emphasis.

The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate structural qualities of certain technical elements of oil painting, (2) to apply these qualities and means to a series of oil paintings related to the figure, (3) to evaluate the quality of structure achieved by these means, and (4) to arrive at conclusions and suggestions for future modifications of the candidate's paintings techniques.
