Throughout history, art has been used to communicate ideas, stimulate the imagination, and engage the senses. In recent times, with the advancement of graphic design in the art industry, creative boundaries have been pushed in the pursuit of innovative design approaches. Design is utilized not only to convey artistic meaning but also to engage the viewers’ senses and influence buyers’ decisions. Some consumers associate designs with different moods or feelings, and color and visual design can powerfully encapsulate personality. Candlesticks were a physical representation of wealth and status, so it’s very likely these were regularly kept on display during meals or in the bedroom. Candles themselves were expensive - given the prosperity of the Schuylers [owners], it’s probable that these were used fairly regularly, as they could afford to maintain a supply of candles. My partner and collaborator Callaway Fox and I use queer surrealist installation, craft practices, and performance in order to address queer and disabled temporality, articulating our experiences as disabled queer femme artists through abstracted and literal exploration of femme bodies in space. In performance and installation works Hospital Performance: Part I and Hospital Performance: Part II, we responded to our experience of marginalization, medical malpractice, and emotional isolation, ultimately exploring queer and disabled temporality through queer surrealism.
