Digital Cultural Heritage Conservation: Sampling Stilt Houses In Tai O Village, Daniel Elkin, Chi-Yuen Leung, Norah Xiaolu Wang, Wai Yeung Yan
IASDR Conference Series
This paper discusses a digital conservation project in Tai O Village, Hong Kong. The research initiative uses a combined LiDAR and photogrammetry scanning technology to document a sample of architecturally distinct stilt houses in Tai O. These buildings support intangible cultural heritage of Tanka fishing culture, and are themselves tangible cultural heritage that is under threat of degradation or possible clearance in the future. This paper presents an effort to digitally preserve physical conditions in twenty of Tai O’s stilt houses, and discusses the steps and considerations of researchers’ digital conservation workflow. The paper contributes to scholarship as a description …

Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of cordage and fabrics from the impressions and markings on pottery has traditionally been conducted by casting the pottery sherds with a plastic or liquid media to make a positive. This positive is then analyzed by measuring attributes under a low-power microscope with calipers. Original Sculpey® is one casting media that has been popular because of its price, accessibility, detail of cast, and permanency of the casts after curing. However, it has been found to impart an organic chemical signature on the sherds, which would bias residue analyses. Further, the plasticizer in Original Sculpey® can soften certain plastics, …

CRHR: Archaeology
From 3D to 3D is a research project that involves traditional ceramics and technology to re-create a clay vessel at different scales and in different materials while trying to understand aesthetic and perceptions of value. With a background in Industrial Design, I have always been interested in technology and fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing being one of them. However, this often implies repetition and standardization, and as an artist I strive to create one-of-a-kind objects that include evidence associated with the making process. Part of my work is based on traditional forms that incorporate small alterations. I use one or …
