Spontaneity In Stained Glass Work, Robert N. Oddy Jul 2011

Spontaneity In Stained Glass Work, Robert N. Oddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Stained glass does not lend itself to spontaneity. We design, thinking always about how the glass will be cut and what glass will be available to us. Then, the fabrication is a very slow and meticulous process, requiring accuracy of cutting so that the pieces fit together closely – glass doesn’t bend, stretch or squash. We have to do too much careful planning, and too much engineering! How can we make our subjects come alive, with movement and energy, when we cannot use our bodies to express these things while we are doing the art?

The Illusion Of Depth In Stained Glass: Exposed To The Light, Robert N. Oddy Jul 2011

The Illusion Of Depth In Stained Glass: Exposed To The Light, Robert N. Oddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Stained glass artwork often looks flat. Of course, most stained glass panels are flat. What I mean is that the objects depicted look flat. In my own work, I have given a lot of attention to creating the illusion of depth. What is depth? It refers to the spacial dimension that recedes directly away from our eyes into the distance. If a picture has depth, we see some of its elements as solid objects; some appear closer than others; we are aware of foreground, middle distance and background.

Structural Box Design For High Quality Beverages, Caroline Shyu Jul 2011

Structural Box Design For High Quality Beverages, Caroline Shyu

Graphic Communication

This study compared two different top designs for a wine box to determine which design gave the structure more durability. The results showed that the Twist ‘N Give, a new corrugated wine box design with a twist top, appeared to be weaker. The Twist ‘N Give is an alternative choice to the existing corrugated wine box with a traditional tuck top style.

The experimental research method was used for this study. Two samples of each style of top, the twist top and the tuck top, were tested on the Lansmont Squeezer Compression Tester for the peak force and the deflection …

That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry Jul 2011

That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry

English Faculty Research and Scholarship

The poet John Ashbery lived in Paris from roughly 1955 to 1965. It was during this period that Ashbery began writing art reviews, often examining the work of various Americans also living in Paris at this time. Among the many painters Ashbery was to review and publish about, one was the Chicago-born, Paris-based abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell and an exhibition of hers at a Paris gallery in 1964. In this essay I examine the early, more ““abstract”” poetry that Ashbery was developing during this period, thinking about it alongside the paintings of Mitchell (and, in particular, his writings about them). …

Techno File: Glaze Unity Formula, Tina M. Gebhart Jul 2011

Techno File: Glaze Unity Formula, Tina M. Gebhart

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

There are many approaches to modifying a glaze recipe, and different approaches can meet different needs. Some modifications change the colorant level while others change the colorant type altogether. Some may directly replace one material with another add a few weight unit more (or less) of one of the base ingredients in the recipe, or add an amount of an entirely new ingredient. These strategies we use to alter glazes tent to parallel how we cook and modify recipes in the kitchen, but adjustments to the base glaze using the kitchen method do not always give us the results we …

All Student Theses

My hope is to inform people through my art, thus creating a spark that might motivate people to bring about a change in how corporations do business. My art touches mainly on the issues of corporations polluting the environment, massive layoffs, breaking up unions, controlling the media output and sometimes creating situations that harm people, with no accountability.

Teaching Evidence-Based Design To The Beginning Design Student: Educator Perceptions About Incorporating Research In Beginning Design Education, Deborah Rushen Dunlap Jul 2011

Teaching Evidence-Based Design To The Beginning Design Student: Educator Perceptions About Incorporating Research In Beginning Design Education, Deborah Rushen Dunlap

Interior Design Program: Theses and Other Student Work

Educators’ perceptions influence academic protocols regarding the level at which evidence-based design is introduced to design students. Evidence-based design, a research methodology based on quantitative and qualitative inquiry that informs design decisions, permeated healthcare design to the point that the two are almost synonymous (Hamilton & Watkins, 2009; Nussbaumer, 2009). As this research based approach spreads throughout the profession, multiple specialty areas in architecture and interior design adopt evidence-based design into their methodologies (Hamilton & Watkins, 2009). These “developments in design practice now impinge directly upon education” (Zuo, Leonard, & MaloneBeach, 2010, p. 269). Teaching evidence-based design to design students …

Queering Art Before, After And During The Sexual Revolution (1960-1980): A Study Of Aesthetics And Subversion, Gary C. Kilian Mr. Jun 2011

Queering Art Before, After And During The Sexual Revolution (1960-1980): A Study Of Aesthetics And Subversion, Gary C. Kilian Mr.

The Macalester Review

Works produced by the queer artists in 1970s America is oftentimes not considered to be an integral part of the sexual revolution’s narrative. Not only is this problematic in that it demonstrates the heteronormative discourse that permeated liberatory pro-sex rhetoric of the time, but this exclusion also makes the LGBTQ struggle for visibility ahistorical. In this paper, I argue that notable artists who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer created art that fostered gradual acceptance of the queer community before, during and after the sexual revolution, explaining that resistance to dominant paradigms were rendered unseen due to the …

Ink Painting Of Orchids Among The Literati In The Qing And Choson Dynasties, Herin Jung Jun 2011

Ink Painting Of Orchids Among The Literati In The Qing And Choson Dynasties, Herin Jung

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Genres of cultural products have flowed in and out between China and Korea for thousands of years. It is well known that among these genres, the orchid was one of the most elegant subjects in ink painting. Although research has shown which types and how many works have been exchanged between the two countries, the ideas beneath the works deserve greater attention. The works of Kim Chong-hui (1786-1856) in the late Choson Dynasty are particularly valuable. Well known as a great calligrapher and erudite scholar, Kim profoundly explored art history and theory and was especially knowledgeable about successive painters of …

Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser Jun 2011

Coco Chanel : De La Rue À La Haute Couture – Adaptant La Nouvelle Femme, Shannon R. Funkhouser

Honors Theses

The current project sought to analyze the life and work of the designer Coco Chanel. Through investigation into her life course, values, contributions to art, theater, dance, fashion, and women’s rights, it is argued that Chanel embodied the time period in which she lived ; she both influenced, and was influenced by the cultural forces that predominated. Particular attention is paid to the time periods following World War I and World War II, two events that drastically changed artistic aesthetics, social norms, and life values. The post-war eras provided the fuel for the women’s liberation movement, ushering in the idea …

After The Studio: The Politcal Influence Of Visual Imagery, Katherine A. Macewan Jun 2011

After The Studio: The Politcal Influence Of Visual Imagery, Katherine A. Macewan

Honors Theses

Seeking to understand the role of art outside the studio, this paper examines the political effects of visual art in public space. With four artists serving as case studies, the paper interprets these artists’ work using the text of a political theorist to understand both how the public absorbs their pieces and what importance this process has. Fist, using political theorist Hannah Arendt to examine the work of the graffiti artist Banksy, the paper explores the relevance of artist’s intention to the public understanding of an image. Moving to socially conscious photographer Aaron Huey paired with author Susan Sontag, the …

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison Jun 2011

Evolution Of Flow In Games, Paul J. Tunison

Honors Theses

Every one wants to play a fun game, but ”fun” is a subjective quality. Flow, a psychological theory to define what ”fun” is, states that, for an activity to be considered fun, the chal-lenge it presents must correlate with that participant’s abilities such that the activity is neither too easy or too difficult. One of the biggest problems for game designers is balancing the difficulty of its content in such a way that it appeals to the largest audience possible. In order to broaden audiences, de-velopers need to invest effort into creating numerous, discrete balances that are aligned to varying …

Responses To Davis, “Neurovisuality”, Charles J. Palermo Jun 2011

Responses To Davis, “Neurovisuality”, Charles J. Palermo

Arts & Sciences Articles

Things remain visible to people outside the visuality within which they were intentionally produced, though what is visible in an artifact in this context (or what is visible about it) may differ from what is visible in the context of visuality. By the same token, people can succeed to many visualities, though both Wölfflin and Panofsky were somewhat uncertain (on different grounds) about just how far it is possible to do so when we are dealing with visualities constituted in the past and accessible to us only in things made to be visible within them that happen to have survived …

The Penetration Of Social Media In Governance,Political Reforms And Building Public Perception, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr May 2011

The Penetration Of Social Media In Governance,Political Reforms And Building Public Perception, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. While we know that social media can play an important role in publicizing political activities such as protests, do we have evidence that such actions have led to substantive political change? Is it possible to develop a set of indicators to more effectively gauge the impact of new technologies and media on questions of political change? That social media can help coordinate large and discrete activities, such as protests and …

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer May 2011

Creative Consciousness: Becoming A Reflective Designer, Renessa Ciampa Brewer

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

As a graphic designer, I was drawn to the CCT Program in part because I desired to strengthen my thinking skills as a creative professional. Through being reflective, I aimed to “get more in touch” with my process to better understand it and see how I might improve my approaches. Scholarship on reflective practice in design education and design practice is a growing body of literature, which inspired this synthesis project. This paper looks at Schön’s theories of reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action, models for reflection in the design process provided by Ellmers, Brown, and Bennett, and Reymen, and various reflective practice …

The Gleaning Studio: A Space For Redirection And Reflection, Tania Splawa-Neyman May 2011

The Gleaning Studio: A Space For Redirection And Reflection, Tania Splawa-Neyman

Nordes Conference Series

There is a difficult challenge for design practitioners when establishing ways of applying Fry’s (2009) strategy of redirection. Redirection is complex and multifaceted and requires an expansive view of the requirements for future sustainment alongside ways of interpreting these understandings within design process. When redirection demands so much of practitioners, the task can seem insurmountable and a starting point difficult to find. Within this article, I suggest that reflective practice can aid in this pursuit, and through my own practice-based research, offer insights when applying reflective techniques to assist my own redirection. This relational thinking generated the development of an …

Time Travel: A Method For Playful Future-Oriented User Research, Theo Rooden, Paul Eg, Rianne Valkenburg May 2011

Time Travel: A Method For Playful Future-Oriented User Research, Theo Rooden, Paul Eg, Rianne Valkenburg

Nordes Conference Series

This article describes the development of a user research method called ‘Time Travel’. The aim of the method is to inform and inspire designers with imagined futures by consumers. The method should give answers to the following question: How do consumers imagine technological and social developments to have an impact on their personal lives (in a certain domain)? An engaging game concept was developed in a research through design process: generative activities alternated with evaluating mini-experiments. The metaphor of time traveling shaped the design vision by presenting elements such as the suitcase (anchoring the imaginations in the here and now), …

Reversing The Co-Design Process: Co-Design Tools For Post-Occupancy Evaluation, Christina Lundsgaard May 2011

Reversing The Co-Design Process: Co-Design Tools For Post-Occupancy Evaluation, Christina Lundsgaard

Nordes Conference Series

Visual tools such as probes and design games are used during co-design events to facilitate a common design dialogue. They evoke new ideas and invite users, designers and other stakeholders to explore and rehearse future opportunities. This "toolkit" and working practices is continuously evolving, but the focus is almost always on upcoming design. Based on an experiment this article investigates how co-design tools can be used as a part of a post-occupancy evaluation (POE). As an initial analytical framework, performance studies are used to distinguish and discuss a traditional co-design process as a proto-performance and a POE as a reverse …

Practice Theory And Human-Centered Design: A Sustainable Bathing Example, Lenneke Kuijer, Annelise De Jong May 2011

Practice Theory And Human-Centered Design: A Sustainable Bathing Example, Lenneke Kuijer, Annelise De Jong

Nordes Conference Series

Within sustainable design, design researchers and practitioners are developing novel design approaches equipped to influence domestic resource consumption in a variety of ways. However, as it turns out, the outcomes of these approaches in terms of their actual effects on sustainability are not quite as high as the desired effects. This is often taken to be a direct consequence of rebound effects or unpredicted user behaviour. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, this article explores the implications of the combination of two research strands, practice theory and human-centred design that may assist designers by going beyond behaviour towards gaining …
