Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition entitled "Inspired Industry" at Johnson City Area Arts Council, Johnson City, Tennessee, from November 14 - December 22, 2005. It is the culmination of studies and research affected by the artist's own industry vis-à-vis personal inspirations, including: discussion of aesthetics and personal utilization of the techniques learned in relation to both functional and non-functional ceramic forms. This is a self-evaluation of personal preferences and how this body of ceramic work evolved.

Alternative Voices: Artists’ Books, Comix, And Zines, Sally Dickinson
Alternative Voices: Artists’ Books, Comix, And Zines, Sally Dickinson
Watkinson Publications
Guide to Watkinson exhibition.
This exhibition is arranged primarily by theme and secondarily by structure. Added to the large representation of artists’ books are examples of other contemporary alternative voices such as Art Spiegelman’s comic, In the Shadow of No Towers, and Karen Switzer’s zine, Ker-bloom! These works form a group that is innovative, visual, and outside the mainstream publishing industry. Some works are collaborations. Several have musical and audio components. They all present a personal vision through exploration of processes, materials, and form, that we are invited to share.

Physics Faculty Works
Multifractal analysis techniques are applied to patterns in several abstract expressionist artworks, painted by various artists. The analysis is carried out on two distinct types of structures: the physical patterns formed by a specific color (“blobs”) and patterns formed by the luminance gradient between adjacent colors (“edges”). It is found that the multifractal analysis method applied to “blobs” cannot distinguish between artists of the same movement, yielding a multifractal spectrum of dimensions between about 1.5 and 1.8. The method can distinguish between different types of images, however, as demonstrated by studying a radically different type of art. The data suggest …

This Body Of Art: The Singular Plural Of The Feminine, Helen A. Fielding
This Body Of Art: The Singular Plural Of The Feminine, Helen A. Fielding
Helen A Fielding
I explore the possibility that the feminine, like art, can be thought in terms of Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept of the singular plural. In Les Muses, Nancy claims that art provides for the rethinking of a technë not ruled by instrumentality. Specifically, in rethinking aesthetics in terms of the debates laid out by Kant, Hegel and Heidegger, he resituates the ontological in terms of the specificity of the techniques of each particular artwork; each artwork establishes relations particular to its world or worlds. What is at stake in the singular plural is the multiplicity of relations that are lost in the …

IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the why …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is intended to analyze the differences of elementary age students from two different public elementary schools and their motivation to learn about art. The analysis will compare and contrast the results of my efforts as an art educator to present the same curricular information to both groups of students.
I have examined the demographics, the parent involvement, and the other areas affecting the students of the two schools in which I have taught during my seven years as an elementary art educator. My purpose in completing this study has been to better understand how to meet the needs …
Searching For Wisdom Through Art, Maria A. Gonzalez
Searching For Wisdom Through Art, Maria A. Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Wisdom is virtue humanity has sought since the beginning of its creation. Humanity will continue to search for wisdom throughout their lives. The book of Proverbs is a collection of ample advice and words of wisdom for those who seek it. It is a book that can be followed throughout our lives. My artwork is a collection of offerings inspired by the proverbs of Solomon. They are created to open up the minds of those who seek wisdom, it offers a visual interpretation of moral value that many time become lost in society.

Man In A Suitcase: Tulse Luper At Compton Verney, Anthony Purdy, Bridget Elliott
Anthony Purdy
Exploring in the gallery space the possibilities of an experimental intermediality, Luper at Compton Verney deploys the suitcase both as an emblem for key moments of twentieth-century history, including Auschwitz , and as a recurrent device in twentieth-century art. This essay examines the intersections of art and history in an exhibition space conceived as a complex heterotopian play of "other spaces," such as suitcase installations, vitrine displays, film projections, video screenings, drawings, and maps.

'La Maggior Porcheria Del Mondo': Documents For Ammannati's Neptune Fountain, Felicia M. Else
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
The story of the creation of the Neptune Fountain on the Piazza della Signoria in Florence is long and tortuous. Scholars have drawn on a wealth of documentary material regarding the competition for the commission, the various phases of the fountain's construction, and the critical reception of its colossus, both political and aesthetic. A collection of unpublished letters at the Getty Research Center in Los Angeles offers a new perspective on the making of this major public monument. Sent by Bartolomeo Ammannati to the prvveditore of Pisa, they chronicle the artist's involvement in the procurement and transportation of marble from …
