Audio To Architecture: House Music As A Form Generator, Polina Timchenko Dec 2018

Audio To Architecture: House Music As A Form Generator, Polina Timchenko

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

Contemporary music undergoes similar process of creation to that of the design process through computation and variation. House music as a representation of contemporary culture has a layered structure that allows specific characteristics to identify it as house music. Song components can vary and mix in different orders that form new dynamic compositions. I am going to explore the idea that every house music component can be translated into geometry with the use of parametric design techniques.

How Representation Of Game Information Affects Player Performance, Matthew Paul Bryan Jun 2018

How Representation Of Game Information Affects Player Performance, Matthew Paul Bryan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of this small experiment was to see if it could be determined whether or not user interface design and the way information is portrayed in a game can affect a player’s performance in that game. During this study, 26 anonymous participants selected one design of a timer from three different categories to be used in a simple, objective-based game. 10 different participants were then run through three levels of that game, with each level corresponding to a different version of timer. The amount of objectives completed were recorded, as well as their thoughts on which version they ...

Designing A World: A Foray Into Scenography And Settling, Nathan David Ynacay May 2018

Designing A World: A Foray Into Scenography And Settling, Nathan David Ynacay

LSU Master's Theses

This work examines the design process as taught and what was practiced during Louisiana State University’s production of LMNOP the Muzical.

This will examine the design process as typically taught to undergraduate theatre students in all aspects of the discipline. The collaborative nature of the design process as taught to cast members, directors, and production team will be examined. After this examination, the design process for Louisiana State University’s production of LMNOP the Muzical will be used to compare and contrast the actual process with the theory of a collaborative design process. After, there will be an evaluation ...

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, Alyson Krajewski May 2018

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?, Alyson Krajewski

Honors Projects

I have great pride for the neighborhood in which I was raised – a community that, while founded in strong Polish roots, has developed into an amalgamation of culture. Growing up with a deep connection to my Polish heritage as well as my Toledo pride has compelled me to introspectively question my identity, both as an individual and within my local community. These questions of self-identity vs. “identities within communities” have roots within topics of upbringing, social clubs, education, race, gender, and inclusivity.

Within my own neighborhood, one of the few remaining places where large bodies of citizens still gather to ...

Prescription Packaging Design For The Impaired : A Meta-Analysis., Amber C. Kleitz May 2018

Prescription Packaging Design For The Impaired : A Meta-Analysis., Amber C. Kleitz

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses

This thesis is a critical analyzation of the state of prescription drug packaging in the United States with respect to unresolved problems for users with visual, physical, and cognitive impairments. It begins with an anecdotal overview inspired by Deborah Adler’s journey of prescription drug packaging for her grandparents and her design solution outlined by a case study. This case study focuses on the need for better prescription packaging for those with the aforementioned and neglected issues.

This thesis uses studies in user-centered design, packaging design, and industrial design among others in order to critically assess and question the current ...

Integrating Systematic Design For Sustainability In Design Education To Stimulate Sustainability Awareness In Developing Countries: A Case Study In Rwanda, Aziza Cyamani Jan 2018

Integrating Systematic Design For Sustainability In Design Education To Stimulate Sustainability Awareness In Developing Countries: A Case Study In Rwanda, Aziza Cyamani

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is a shared opinion that sustainability designers, regardless of their domain of specialization, need to reframe their traditional modus operandi to adapt practices that are less harmful. This is due to studies that continue to indicate that traditional design practices and outcomes greatly contribute to environmental, social, and economic degradation. Design for sustainability in itself is not a new concept; it has been extensively explored and a plethora of methods, tools, and approaches have emerged from its practice. Even more interesting is its integration in design education. Currently, methods of certifying, refining, and tracking the integration of sustainability in ...

An Optimization And Uncertainty Quantification Framework For Patient-Specific Cardiac Modeling, Joshua Mineroff Jan 2018

An Optimization And Uncertainty Quantification Framework For Patient-Specific Cardiac Modeling, Joshua Mineroff

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Patient-specific cardiac models can be used to improve the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, practical application of these models is impeded by the computational costs and numerical uncertainties of fitting them to clinical measurements from individual patients. Reliable and efficient model tuning within medically-appropriate error bounds is a requirement for practical deployment in the time-constrained environment of the clinic. In this work, we present a framework to efficiently tune parameters of patient-specific mechanistic models using routinely acquired non-invasive patient data with a hybrid particle swarm and pattern search optimization algorithm.

The proposed framework is used to tune full-cycle lumped parameter ...

Anxious?: Re-Designing Women’S Jewelry To Help Manage Symptoms Of Anxiety Disorders, Nourbanu Feras Hijazi Jan 2018

Anxious?: Re-Designing Women’S Jewelry To Help Manage Symptoms Of Anxiety Disorders, Nourbanu Feras Hijazi

Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety is a common and often stigmatized condition. Destigmatizing mental disorders can positively impact people’s interaction and communication with others and can prompt conversations in which people share their experiences with mental health, leading to improved societal understanding and perception.

My design solution tackles behavioral symptoms of anxiety, specifically two conditions that fall under obsessive-compulsive behavior: Dermatillomania and Trichotillomania. By redesigning women’s jewelry to specialized accessories, my intention is for these objects to help destigmatize these conditions and relieve symptoms of maladaptive behaviors and hurtful impulses. By redirecting these irresistible urges to an external artifact, the objects are ...

Happy, Dontay Farley Jan 2018

Happy, Dontay Farley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of graphic design and how it can be used as tool to create awareness about mental illness and positive solutions to decrease its affect on individuals. Using the “simple things” in life as metaphors, this thesis attempts to use graphic design as a way to help decrease depression. Drawing on the emergent strands of enquiry associated with mental illness, this thesis will investigate how design and its basic principles can be used create positive experiences for the complex issue of mental illness.

This thesis will also review the body of critical and historical design thinking ...
