Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.

Two black and white zone plate photographs from the series "Vanishing Horizon" were selected from 500 images submitted to "Photo Midwest" a seven states juried competition by Lisa Hostetler Associate Curator of Photography at the Milwaukee Museum of Art . The 50 selected images were displayed at the University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Union Galleries in Madison, WI.

"Abandoned Harbor" a 16x20 digital inkjet print from the series "Vanishing Points" placed in the national competition "Creative Images Fine Art Photography" and will be exhibitied in the Artsgarden in Indianapolis, Indiana for the month of November. The series, "Vanishing Points" documents the landscape of abandoned mines in Michigan's Upper Peninsula as they appear today with hand-built pinhole and zoneplate cameras.

“Self-portrait with skull,” a graphite 18" x 24" drawing, was accepted into MIRROR IMAGES: Reflections on/of the Arts, the 2012 Kreft Juried Exhibition held at the Kreft Center for the Arts at Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The jurors, Gloria Prischet and Rocco DePietro, co-founders and co-directors of Gallery Project, Ann Arbor, Michigan, chose images that according to the prospectus, “displayed the very best in the visual arts that illustrate the reflective nature of the visual arts in the literal, intellectual and metaphorical sense of that word.” The exhibit ran from March 6 – April 4, 2012.

My poster illustration, "Angel Rising," was included in the 2nd Annual International Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport: A Fine Art Competition Exhibit at the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. NAMOS was founded in 1959, and features one of the nation's largest collections of fine art depicting sports. The collection includes more than 900 paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed-media works representing some 40 sports. October 27, 2011 to February 29, 2012.

"Take Flight," a baseball bat painted to represent the ideals of Toronto Blue Jays outfielder José Bautista. It was an invitational exhibit curated by Dave Murray, of the Garrison Creek Bat Company.On May 13, 2013, more than 1,000 VIP guests, including the Toronto Blue Jays, took the field at Rogers Centre for the annual Curve Ball in support of children and youth in need across Canada. The 2013 edition was a resounding success, raising close to $950,000!

Two illustrations, “Cecropia Bot,” and “Roach Bot,” were selected for the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles’ Illustration West 51st annual show. Juried by professional illustrators, Robin Richesson, Lisa French, Craig Elliott, Rick Anwyl, Scott Bakal and Whitney Sherman, this show is considered the largest juried illustration competition west of New York. The work was displayed at Gallery Nucleus in Los Angeles, and as part of an online exhibit accessible via the SILA website.
