Sticky Media. Encounters With Oil Through Imaginary Media Archaeology, Naomie Gramlich Oct 2018

Sticky Media. Encounters With Oil Through Imaginary Media Archaeology, Naomie Gramlich

communication +1

This paper investigates how media archaeology and the concept of deep time could be taken literally, by bringing authors of early media studies (McLuhan, Innis) together with contemporary eco-material approaches (Gabrys, Parikka) on the topic of oil. Following these conjunctions of media and oil the article first traces certain prevailing narrations in media studies, before turning to the understanding of oil beyond its industrial uses and its catastrophic dimensions in the petro-imaginary of Satin Island by Tom McCarthy. In terms of imaginary media archeology, petro-imaginary provides a conceptual space in which a new relation of images of material reality to ...

Apontamentos Para Uma Cartografia Do Pensamento Pedagógico De António Pedro -- Para Uma Arquitectura Do Teatro De Amadores, Teresa André Aug 2014

Apontamentos Para Uma Cartografia Do Pensamento Pedagógico De António Pedro -- Para Uma Arquitectura Do Teatro De Amadores, Teresa André

Portuguese Cultural Studies

Abstract: António Pedro, the avejão, stood out in the Portuguese cultural landscape as one of the introducers of artistic and aesthetic concerns that were surfacing at the time in Europe. Over a period of several decades, he traced a consistent and disciplined path, breaking with prevailing ideologies and reacting against imposed artistic trends. He revealed the desire for aesthetic growth and the ambition of achieving harmony with cosmic plurality, as well as contributing to awakening other artistic creators to need for change. This article intends to illustrate the intense relationship of this artist with the various arts, and more specifically ...

Estratégias De Deformação E Transformação Em Apenas Uma Narrativa, Bruno Silva Rodrigues Aug 2014

Estratégias De Deformação E Transformação Em Apenas Uma Narrativa, Bruno Silva Rodrigues

Portuguese Cultural Studies

Abstract: Apenas uma narrativa uses several core principles of Surrealism to construct a circular journey between reality and dream. Above all, there is an intention in this work to praise the unconscious. This is part of a general attempt by twentieth century artists to propose an alternative to the prevailing rational and logical mode. In the case of Apenas uma narrativa, this is not only achieved by the surrealist matrix, but also through the semiotics of the illustrations and the use of the Freudian concept of the uncanny. The various experimental journeys carried out by the protagonist of the story ...

Da Dor -- Um Percurso Vital (A Propósito Do Poema Inédito De António Pedro, "Annuaire Confidentiel"), Isabel Ponce De Leão

Portuguese Cultural Studies

Abstract: The unpublished poem “Annuaire Confidentiel” (undated) by António Pedro, which belongs to the estate of the Belgian surrealist E. L. T. Mesens, calls for a reflection on the author’s literary and pictorial production. Without denying surrealism, what it draws on is, above all, abjectionism, tracing a vital circuit which aproximates art and life. On the other hand, on the path towards dimensionism, of which the author was one of the pioneers, this poem represents a visuality that relates it to the pictorial arts in general and “Le crachat embelli” (1934) in particular. I propose to consider here these ...

António Pedro Pintor, José-Augusto França Aug 2014

António Pedro Pintor, José-Augusto França

Portuguese Cultural Studies

Abstract: António Pedro became interested, from fairly early on, in visual and mixed media expression, alongside literature and theatre. From the mid 1930s onwards, he produced a significant number of works (sketches, dimensional poems, invented objects, paintings, sculptures, ceramics) that were to have a significant impact on the artistic context in Portugal throughout the 1930s and 1940s. This article provides an overview of some of his most emblematic paintings, influenced to varying degrees by Surrealism or some aspects of it, and often characterized by subversive and oniric compositions. As such, it sheds light on the extent to which the pictorial ...
