Twenty-One, Melanie F. Gillis-Janssen Jan 2016

Twenty-One, Melanie F. Gillis-Janssen

The Graduate Review

Artist's Statement:

Twenty-one is a composition portrait of a teenager. The technique employed includes printing the image on 5” x 7” aluminum flashing, using an inkjet transfer process. While investigating alternative printing processes, I learned of German artist Berit Myreboe’s hauntingly beautiful portraits that are manipulated transfer prints on aluminum, accented with paint. I emulated Myreboe’s work in using aluminum as a printing surface for my portraits, but I decided not to add paint to soften the images. I utilized aluminum as a printing surface to add depth to the work and to reinforce a sense of ...

Photo Essay - Looking Backwards And Forwards: Works By Five Emeritus Art Faculty, Stephen Smalley Nov 2015

Photo Essay - Looking Backwards And Forwards: Works By Five Emeritus Art Faculty, Stephen Smalley

Bridgewater Review

Last spring, five Bridgewater State University art professors emeritus displayed their artworks on campus, depicting their personal reminiscences of the Art Center, the university’s oldest building. The mixed media exhibition was held in Boyden Hall, the building that housed the art department in a basement location until January 1976, when the department was moved to the Art Center. Participating former faculty members were John Droege, Roger Dunn, Joan Hausrath, Dorothy Pulsifer and Stephen Smalley, long-serving colleagues in the art department.

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde Jan 2011

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde

Undergraduate Review

Strong design solutions are rarely arrived at by chance and are often inconceivable without an evolutionary process of ideation. Carefully crafted messages that take into account how a reader interprets an image demand the skills of a designer who is in a sense a translator, visualizing abstract concepts in concrete form. My inquiry revolves around the process of representing a salt shaker through a series of visual studies using diverse methods of expression such abstraction, reduction, and stylization. The intention was to investigate the question; What are the limits and possibilities of visual expression in the representation of a simple ...
