East, West and In-Between
If art is a reflection of the creator, then Wong’s work is a visual collage of influences from East and West. She is interested in creating works where, within one piece, both cultures converse with one another not only through their traditions of material, form and craftsmanship, but also through their original cultural contexts. Her current work elaborates the local culture and craft traditions of Chinese pottery with a modernist and contemporary sense of design.

Schmucker Art Catalogs
A stuffed blowfish, a meticulously-drawn insect, a ravishing lily, and a rhinoceros horn carved with scenes of plants and animals—these were among the wonders of nature and artifice, the marvels that fueled the Renaissance quest for knowledge. This exhibition explores the intellectual and aesthetic motivations of Renaissance naturalists and collectors, whose wonders of nature and artifice were displayed in elaborate gardens, illustrated books, and remarkable cabinets of curiosities. Collectors were driven by curiosity and a sense of wonder about what seemed to be an ever-expanding world. Students from Prof. Felicia Else’s upper-level art history course and Kay Etheridge’s First Year …

Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an American sculptor, illustrator, and printmaker. He is perhaps best known as a figurative sculptor and a creator of monumental woodcuts. The Gehenna Press, Baskin’s private press, operated for over 50 years (1942-2000) and produced more than 100 volumes of fine art books. His most prominent public commissions include sculpture for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Woodrow Wilson Memorial, both in Washington D.C., and the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, MI. Organize Your Own: The Politics And Poetics Of Self-Determination Movements, Augustana College, Rock Island Illinois
2017-2018
Organize Your Own, curated by Daniel Tucker, features work by contemporary artists that responds to the history of multiracial coalitions organizing against racism, poverty, and oppression. The ATMA was the first stop on OYO's six-leg tour between 2017-2019. For this travelling exhibition, my work focused on two areas: providing more framework in the reading area around the Young Lords, and organizing programming that was specific to our venue.

2017-2018
#YarnBombQC brought the sculptor Carol Hummel the the Quad Cities to work with our communities to create crocheted, site-specific, community-based public art on trees in three locations: Augustana College, the Figge Art Museum, and Longfellow Liberal Arts School. This project, like much of the art by Hummel, draws diverse sectors of communities together in a positive, celebratory way to help create major pieces of art for the people, by the people. Well over 100 community members participated by creating crocheted circles, which the artist and her assistants stitched together and installed on the trees. Participants included students from Augustana College, …

"Sukima is a Japanese word for a crack in a door, a narrow space that opens up when the panels of the sliding doors are pushed to the sides. ... You’ve seen enough to electrify your imagination and let it complete the picture. This is what happens when you look at a long and narrow ukiyo-e print in a pillar format – hashira-e. Or perhaps this partial sight only unleashes your curiosity and, craving a fuller view, you expand the narrow slit and can now enjoy broader vistas replete with details. For such cases ukiyo-e designers came up with …

Manual, a journal about art and its making. Out of Line. The nineth issue. This issue of *Manual*—themed Out of Line—is a collection about the way that lines disrupt, point outward. In poetry, the attention to detail one takes in crafting a line is all about making the line disappear, making something it holds to take front stage. . . . The space between the lines creating the image . . . the space around that argues for the importance of all that the lines hold. The Challenge: Innovation for Refugees and Displaced Populations
One of the great challenges of our time is how to help refugees and displaced populations, and how to prevent the causes in the first place. Every minute, 24 people around the world are forced to flee their homes. That’s 34,000 people a day who leave everything behind in the hope of finding safety and a better tomorrow. The impact of war, political, racial and religious conflict, and environmental crises of famine and climate change, have caused great suffering …

Our project is designed to serve as a means for speakers of different languages to communicate using pictorial icons, particularly to serve basic needs such as food and water. Understanding a discipline requires a fundamental understanding of its terminology. The terminology of information literacy, used by librarians and professors, comprises a language integrated within all disciplines. Critical to academic success, it’s often assumed to be widely understood by students.
The students of Graphic Design V, fall 2016, created a visual glossary to help students learn this critical terminology. This bold, eye-catching informational campaign, produced and disseminated in and outside of the Library, promotes learning through innovative designs created by students for students. The materials, introduced in a 2017 ACRL presentation, Warning! This Program Contains Graphic Content: Facilitating Understanding of …

Exhibition Catalogs
"Emigdio Vasquez created artwork that challenged Orange County’s more prominent narrative of wealthy beachside neighborhoods. He painted the brown bodies and brown histories that defined our earliest communities and economy... Vasquez produced much of the local art history that Orange County should be known for and should protect. It is with this perspective that Chapman University is proud to present the exhibition, My Barrio: Emigdio Vasquez and Chicana/o Identity in Orange County, in conjunction with the Getty Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. We hope to initiate discourse not only about Vasquez’s prolific career, but also about the larger political …
