Exhibition Notes, Number 14, Spring 2001. What Is Really Free? Acts of kindness and the stories people tell: an Interview. Between February and June of this year, Indira Freitas Johnson traveled each week from the Chicago area to work with a literacy group at the Knight Memorial Branch of the Providence Public Library. Starting with these students, recent immigrants learning English, Johnson began to collect stories of occasions where people had given "freely” of their time and spirit for the nourishment of others. Nexus Literary Journal

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

American printmaking experienced a surge in popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, when many artists began looking to their own environments as subject matter. The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries

In 1982 printmaker and painter David Leach created a photo intaglio print titled Broken Line (fig .1) that records an illusion, a seeming change in angle of a twig partly immersed in water, an effect resulting from light refraction. The image might almost serve as commentary on Leach's production as artist. He has stated that in 1982 he realized he was not a "post-studio" artist. 1 That conclusion caused him to move away from the conceptualist investigations that had become the focus of his art by the later 1970s and for which work he had established a reputation. Contemporary theory and criticism of photography has generally taken the form of a face-off between formalism and contextualism. The first postion contends that what is required to understand a photograph is prmarily a close examination of its formal structure, the ability to connect it to other art forms, and perhpas some knowledge of the artist's biography and intentions. The second position holds that photographs have no meaning outside of the scoial and political context of their making. For the most part, these positions have been hardened and adversarial.
