Living Stillness, Nunzio Paci Apr 2020

Living Stillness, Nunzio Paci

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

The artist-in-residence in the Fall of 2019-2020 was Mr Nunzio Paci, an Italian artist whose paintings and drawings bring out unexpected connections between human or animal anatomy on the one hand, and plants and flowers on the other hand. The intertwining of the human form with other natural forms is a motif in Art Nouveau art, but Paci’s drawing style seems to owe more to Renaissance anatomical and botanical drawings such as Leonardo da Vinci’s.

Moreover, like Leonardo, Paci relies on close observation, for example, of anatomical wax models and even genuine human corpses. In other words, he draws from …

Continuity, Aleksandar Eftimovski

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

The sculptures displayed in this exhibition demonstrate knowledge transfer and cultural exchange between Aleksandar and Lingnan students in the process of creating site-specific works. They are largely made by timber from Chi Kee Sawmill & Timber, which was founded in North Point on Hong Kong Island in 1947, but later relocated to Chai Wan and then its current site in Kwu Tong, Sheung Shui in 1982. Unfortunately, this rare survivor of timber business has recently been identified as one of the first areas to be cleared for the controversial North East New Territories Development Plan launched by the HKSAR government. …

Hortus Conclusus 囚, Lantian D.

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

The Work of Lantian D.

One of the most basic things to understand about Lantian D.’s work is that it is born out of an acute awareness of the weaknesses inherent in contemporary art. The sorry state of the contemporary artworld is even the theme of one her earliest paintings, Crime and Punishment, which contains some suggestive depictions of artists and intellectuals who may bear some responsibility for the present situation: Jacques Derrida, Marcel Duchamp, Tracy Emin, Michel Foucault, Clement Greenberg, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Charles Saatchi, and Andy Warhol are all depicted as witch-like creatures from one of …

East, West And In-Between; Pass It On, Kam Fung, Sita Wong

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

East, West and In-Between

If art is a reflection of the creator, then Wong’s work is a visual collage of influences from East and West. She is interested in creating works where, within one piece, both cultures converse with one another not only through their traditions of material, form and craftsmanship, but also through their original cultural contexts. Her current work elaborates the local culture and craft traditions of Chinese pottery with a modernist and contemporary sense of design.

Pass It On

Clay, a material full of possibilities, is best to describe a class of uninitiated ceramics learners in the …

Humorous Field - Field To Humour = 幽默地誌 - 地致幽默, Kwok Kin So

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

This is an experiment in spatial humour, and this assumption of humour can be applied to any urban space. Since this project starts with Lingnan University’s support of its Artist-in-Residence Program, it would seem appropriate to base the experiment around the university campus. Two straight lines were laid on the map of Tuen Mun. The lines extend to East-West through the ridge. The line to the South stretches across the valley and ends on the South coast. Two transects span a wide variety spaces and urban life in Tuen Mun. They would become the premises of this experiment. Exploring the …

Manifold Worlds, Ying Mui, Grace Tang

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

We start to know our world when we begin our existence, and we believe that the world is like what we see. But is the world we know the real world? It may just be a world of how we feel about the real world! We are born equipped with a set of sensors to perceive the world. Our perception of the world depends on these sensors. Other living things possess different sensors; they see their worlds differently from us and each other. Although we have different perceptions of the same world, we do exist in the same physical world. …

Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, Anna Glynn Dec 2013

Wonderment : Chinese Ink Paintings / Video / Projection / Installation / Soundscape, Anna Glynn

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

A major component of Wonderment is the first showing of work done as part of my multimedia MEOAW Project: My Extraordinary Onomatopoeic Animal World. Onomatopoeic words mimic the sounds they represent; the sound of the word imitates the sound the object makes. The words are creations of our human minds and in different cultures and languages the words for the same sounds differ. The Lingnan University community responded enthusiastically to my call for volunteers to participate in the MEAOW project. I have spent many happy hours collecting and recording sound and video from members of this wonderful, culturally-diverse population.

Intertextuality : A Residency Project At Lingnan University 2013 = 互為文本, Chun Fai Chow, Michelle Lee, Ivy Ma

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

The intertextual works articulate their meanings through the process of creation but not through the artists alone. The significances and meanings of the artworks are produced by the copying and referencing of texts that already exist. Creators of these 'new' works forgo the identity as an author, the tracing of originality and the following of reading habits and traditions are to be violated. The process of reading, deciphering and judging of the artworks injects new meanings into the original texts written by the old masters; any blockages or fragmentation that happens in the process will further promote the conceptualisation and …

Embracing The Threshold, Nicola Barsaleau Apr 2012

Embracing The Threshold, Nicola Barsaleau

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

Our Lingnan residency, now in its fourth month, is a comprehensive exploration of creativity in day-to-day living. Creativity satisfies a portion of vital human needs: the need for autonomy, adventure, celebration, community, play, and spiritual harmony. Contemplating our artistic self is healthy. In some cases, artistic activity can be immensely healing, leading towards wholeness, balance, and integration. This project was enacted at both a communal and personal level for many of the participants, including myself.

Our own individual life force flows through us in intriguingly personal ways. We all have unique gifts to offer and uncover that no other person …

Moving Mountain = 移山, Kwun Lun,Tony Ng, Lap Wing Yip

A Residency Project by Lai Wai-Yi, Monti

Close your eyes, and try to see the colour in your mind. Would that be white, yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, green or a mix of different colour? Green has been the colour that remains in my head whenever my eyes are closed, ever since I received a homemade herbal poultice after an accident at the age of 6. I was bitten by a dog at my aunt’s home. It was a sunny winter day. I was wearing my favorite yellow furry coat. I was patting the dog’s forehead and talking to her. …

There was no requirement or experience needed for the participation; and it was also unnecessary to have any personal reaction to the …

In a new exhibition ‘Th at Moment Now’ on show at Lingnan University, Hong Kong artist Celia Ko presents three bodies of work that take as their subject the artist’s relationship to her maternal Chinese ancestry. In pursuing her subject Ko has created a trilogy of images through which the interior life of her family is approached from diff erent vantage points. Using large-scale images and hand made garments and jewellery Ko explores the pervasive power of familial myths and narratives.

The first part of the exhibition are large-scale portraits of her mother’s parents: grandfather …

WORDSFORPICTURES intersects with the Lingnan Library site and collection.

The exhibition represents a culmination of a series of discrete interventions that occurred over the residency. The installation operates as a linguistic production offering oblique narratives to explore the notion of the Library as a storehouse of accumulated facts, hypotheses, conjectures and fictions.
