Art Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the last two years of research toward a Master of Fine Art in Studio Art. I mainly address my painting practice, but while in the program, I have worked in collage, ceramics, intaglio printmaking, and sculpture. My paintings are thick, multilayered, and often contain ambiguous narratives. The pictures develop through engagement, openness, and response within the work. I seek and embrace connection with viewers of the work. The spectator ‘completes’ the art and enhances or alters the artworks meaning by observing it and applying their individual perspectives. I seek to incorporate a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. …

Art Theses and Dissertations

The environment you grow up in can become a pivotal part of your existence. The sights, smells, people, and places you experience every day can transform the way you see the world. Growing up in a Mexican-American household has brought its own set of experiences that have made me the artist I am today. I am one of many contemporary artists building on the foundations of their heritage and the Chicano movement. The Stadium is a separate world, one that holds different laws and physics. Here, I explore the correlation between Slapstick Comedy and Horror genres and their ability to bend reality in order to create a story arch. The Players references tropes played out within these genres, Ophelia and the Final Girl, and …

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk

eBooks

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.

Bywaters played a major role in establishing the Texas …
