Archives, Artwork, And A Garden: The John Stokes And Mary’S Gardens Collection At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris
Kayla Harris
The University of Dayton hosted a unique exhibit in the spring of 2017 highlighting the John Stokes and Mary’s Gardens archival collection. In addition to materials from the collection, the exhibit also featured a live garden with flowers named for the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the library, and specially commissioned artwork by artist Holly Schapker. The library was able to reach different audiences and hopes this will serve as an example in thinking of more interactive ways for visitors to experience an archival exhibit.
Bodies Of Water: Somebody | Nobody (For E.D.), Clark Lunberry
Bodies Of Water: Somebody | Nobody (For E.D.), Clark Lunberry
Clark Lunberry
On a pond adjacent to the University of North Florida’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library, parts of Emily Dickinson’s well-known poem about being a “Nobody” were recently written on the water. During the fall of 2014, the familiar words of that poem’s opening line – “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” – appeared to float upon the library’s pond, reflecting vividly in the light of day (yet disappearing entirely in the dark of night). While inside the library’s large open stairway, on the tall windows that face directly out onto that pond, the first line of the poem’s second stanza – “How …
That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry
That’S The Beauty Of It, Or, Why John Ashbery Is Not A Painter, Clark Lunberry
Clark Lunberry
The poet John Ashbery lived in Paris from roughly 1955 to 1965. It was during this period that Ashbery began writing art reviews, often examining the work of various Americans also living in Paris at this time. Among the many painters Ashbery was to review and publish about, one was the Chicago-born, Paris-based abstract expressionist Joan Mitchell and an exhibition of hers at a Paris gallery in 1964. In this essay I examine the early, more ““abstract”” poetry that Ashbery was developing during this period, thinking about it alongside the paintings of Mitchell (and, in particular, his writings about them). …
Materiality In Site Responsive Art, Daniel Dean, John W. Kim
Materiality In Site Responsive Art, Daniel Dean, John W. Kim
Daniel Dean
Daniel Dean and Ben Moren are both longtime contributors to MAW. Sharing an interest in experimental filmmaking, they formed Mobile Experiential Cinema (MEC) in 2011 for a Northern Spark commission to explore site-specific projection. They have subsequently collaborated on several works that explore comparable themes and ideologies. MEC makes use of the Mobile Broadcasting Unit developed by MAW as a platform for their own work, but Dean and Moren make significant changes to the outfit to facilitate their divergent approach to site-specific, responsive projection. The last section highlighted how site was not a central concern in MAW’s public projections. It …

Jax symphony presents music composed by Glass and Bach accompanied by visual projections—product of artistic collaboration between Vanessa B. Cruz and Sheila Goloborotko. The artists created an elaborate video projection for each composition in an effort to create a unique visual environment to these evocative compositions. With the combination of live music and projections the audience experiences music as abstract imagery that travels and transmutes the physical space and the realm of all senses. The tying thread that will move throughout all three sections will be the energy of Nature. Visuals will move from a water environment to land, creating …
Multifractal Structure In Nonrepresentational Art, Jonas R. Mureika, C. C. Dyer, G. C. Cupchik
Multifractal Structure In Nonrepresentational Art, Jonas R. Mureika, C. C. Dyer, G. C. Cupchik
Jonas Mureika
Multifractal analysis techniques are applied to patterns in several abstract expressionist artworks, painted by various artists. The analysis is carried out on two distinct types of structures: the physical patterns formed by a specific color (“blobs”) and patterns formed by the luminance gradient between adjacent colors (“edges”). It is found that the multifractal analysis method applied to “blobs” cannot distinguish between artists of the same movement, yielding a multifractal spectrum of dimensions between about 1.5 and 1.8. The method can distinguish between different types of images, however, as demonstrated by studying a radically different type of art. The data suggest …

The purpose of this teaching strategy was to find a new source …
Why Do They Sew? A Need To Discover The Motives Of Young Women To Sew Their Own Clothing, Addie Martindale, Ellen Mckinney
Why Do They Sew? A Need To Discover The Motives Of Young Women To Sew Their Own Clothing, Addie Martindale, Ellen Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
The interest in home sewing has seen a resurgence over the last decade, with the fastest growing segment of sewers being young women (IBISWorld, 2014). These women are interested in interested in do-it-yourself fashion and creating unique items for themselves. It has been over 20 years since motivations of home sewers have been studied and this young segment has yet to be researched. This proposed study aims to investigate the motivations that drive these women to sew clothing when ready-made clothing is cheaply available. Pilot study results indicate interesting motivational changes from previous research reveling emerging themes associated with garment …

Gallery Walk: An Activity In Flat Patternmaking For Practice And Critical Thinking About The Application Of Darts And Dart Equivalents, April Elisha Stanley, Ellen Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
The innovative strategy for a flat patternmaking course was to incorporate a Gallery Walk for students to practice applying their knowledge of darts and dart equivalents as an in-class exercise. The purpose in introducing the Gallery Walk in the flat patternmaking class was to engage students in critical thinking and problem-solving about darts and dart manipulations. This Gallery Walk displayed pictures of darts and dart equivalents for students to identify. This allowed student to analyze the similarities and differences of darts and dart equivalents and determine the correct placement of the pictures within the gallery. The findings revealed the Gallery …

Comparison Matrix And Venn Diagram: Making Comparisons In Flat Patternmaking., April Elisha Stanley, Ellen Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
The innovative strategy was piloted in an existing flat patternmaking course. In the current curriculum, students do not utilize any formal comparison tools to compare patternmaking concepts, i.e. dart types, stylelines, and so on. To engage students in making patternmaking comparisons, students were introduced to the use of a comparison matrix and Venn diagram. These comparison tools would allow students to practice identifying and thinking critically about the similarities and differences of patternmaking concepts such as dart types and stylelines. An inventory of student responses was compiled by the instructor after the class period, which permitted further instructor evaluation of …

Concept Maps: Graphic Organizers For Flat Patternmaking, April Elisha Stanley, Ellen Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
In the current flat patternmaking course, students learn patternmaking concepts from the lecture, textbook, instructor-led demonstrations, and self-practice. The innovative strategy was to introduce students to the use of concept maps to organize relevant patternmaking material. By utilizing concept maps, students can chunk or group the patternmaking concepts, which helps them to remember the material. The effectiveness of the concept maps was observed by the instructor in the class. Students expressed that they liked working in pairs because it allowed them to discuss the patternmaking concepts with another person. Students also stated that the concept maps helped them to think …

Generating Decision-Making Hypotheses: An Exercise In Critical Thinking To Select Appropriate Slopers For Flat Patternmaking Bodice Designs, April Elisha Stanley, Ellen Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
The innovative strategy was to introduce students to the concept of generating decision-making hypotheses for flat patternmaking. This would teach students a method of critical thinking to utilize when deciding the appropriate slopers to use in creating basic or original garments. The concept of generating decision-making hypotheses was introduced to students first with a brief explanation and using a general example. Next student were given a context specific example. Then students were required to practice generating their own personal hypotheses for patternmaking. The outcomes were students felt that generating decision-making hypotheses helped them to think more critically about their patternmaking …

Delicate Target: A Multi-Dimensional Representation Of Woman Using Rip Digital Printing Software To Enlarging Half-Scale To Full-Scale, Ellen Carol Mckinney
Ellen C. McKinney
Inspiration. The author previously investigated the use of flowers in advertisements targeting women. This connection between women and flowers implies that the ideal woman is delicate and beautiful like a flower. The exploration outcome was a gown that made the wearer look like a rose (McKinney, 2006). The current design's purpose was to create a multi-faceted representation of the female target market. The visually strong black and white target side exterior was juxtaposed with a delicate floral side collaged from apparel, makeup, perfume, and jewelry advertisements. The wearer's self-representation may be controlled by how the reversible vest is worn. Whether …

Exploration Of Body-To-Pattern Shape And Measurement Relationships For Women's Trouser Patterns Found In Usa And Uk Pattern Drafting Methods: Implications For Garment Fit, Ellen Mckinney, Simeon Gill

Block patterns should accurately reflect the measurements and shape of the individual human form used in their origination to achieve well fitted garments, however, pattern drafting often uses only limited surface measurements and therefore may not be suitably developed to reflect individual forms. Two methods of block drafting (Aldrich, 2008; Joseph-Armstrong, 2010) were selected for investigation of the resultant measurement relationships (ease) and shape relationships between the leg form and drafted trouser patterns
