20-20 Listening: A Sound Documentary Dedicated To The Study Of Listening Experiences In Acoustic Environments, Julian Andres Osorio

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The intersection of sound and design is an exciting and complex space for artistic experimentation and research. My approach for this work was to design, write, record and mix seven podcast episodes that narrate my analysis and interpretation of how we listen to sounds and interpret their meaning. Each episode is dedicated to one topic, and presents multiple sound samples that illustrate my take on the subject. The episodes cover the basics of listening, how sound conveys information about objects in environments and how soundscapes are ubiquitous. They include how the music, sounds and noises in film convey meaning, represent ...

I believe that aural and visual language can contribute and inspire one another. Sound evokes the emotions and the senses. It is a catalyst for our imagination. It can be combined with imagery for the purpose of communication, harmoniously or contrastively. Both have corresponding characteristics—color/timbre, brightness/pitch, length/duration, scale/volume, composition/rhythm—and thus provide ways of transforming each other back and forth as input and output. Computer technology has increased the ease of transforming and manipulating the two. In my thesis project, I explore sound visualization, sound/image transformation and combination.

Aural Landscapes, Brandi Price

Theses and Dissertations

Music and design draw upon innate parallels concerned with the creation and existence of space. By acknowledging the roles of both the visual and the aural in my design process as input and output, I attempt to achieve a deeper understanding of my intuition as a visual communicator. I believe that the visual and aural are linked—existing harmoniously together. The collected works present ever-evolving ideas on visualizing the experience of sound.
