This thesis examines the interaction of pictures and words in children’s storybooks. The illustrations placed alongside the text of the book are just as important to understanding the story as are the words. “Illustrated Tales of Little Sister Fox” combines elements of several traditional Russian folktales into a single story. Illustrations are hand sketched and digitally painted.

The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into the process of writing, illustrating, editing, and getting a book published. Included is analysis of Vicky’s Secret, a sample chapter, and synopses of the other chapters. Numerous drawn and digitally edited illustrations are interspersed throughout to reflect portions of the story visually. The practical approach led to a proficient understanding of creating illustrated fiction.

Born in Bowling Green, Ky., Dorothy Grider quickly recognized her desire to be an artist. Availing herself of opportunities to study at Western Kentucky State Teachers College (Bowling Green, KY) and the Phoenix Art Institute (New York, NY), Grider worked freelance, illustrating posters, sheet music covers, catalogs,and Catholic holy cards. After two years with the U. S. Playing Card Company (Cincinnati, OH), Grider accepted employment with Norcross Greeting Card Company.
