I am an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video and installation. I employ these mediums to create a coming of age story as a Dominican New Yorker, exploring masculinity, vulnerability, the supernatural, family, and religion, as well as how culture plays a role in my community and in my life.

The Gehenna Press, Baskin’s private press, operated for over 50 years (1942-2000) and produced more than 100 volumes of fine art books. His most prominent public commissions include sculpture for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Woodrow Wilson Memorial, both in Washington D.C., and the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, MI. Baskin received numerous honors, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish …

The poet Ben Okri wrote: “Stories are the secret reservoir of values: change the stories individuals and nations live by and tell themselves, and you change the individuals and nations.” (Stibbe)
In the early 21st Century we are facing numerous environmental problems that are being caused by human activity. This era is termed the Anthropocene , a time when accumulated pollutants are causing detrimental ecological change. Ocean creatures are threatened by increasing seawater temperature, acidifying pH levels and melting ice. On land we are experiencing droughts, alteration of biomes, extinctions and an atmosphere that contains less oxygen per breath than …

Lamination Of Reality : Ever-Thickening And Thinning Space, Leekyung Kang
Lamination Of Reality : Ever-Thickening And Thinning Space, Leekyung Kang
Masters Theses
Since 2014, my work has navigated question of surface and through this search in order to redefined conventional understandings of space. Often times, my imagery draws on architectural infrastructure (such as construction sites and scaffolding), exposing the underlying structural framework within these landscapes. Through the recent installation, I establish a correlation between the bone/skeleton of the location to expose a more raw and unseen space, which is present but never fully revealed.
In Google Earth, the camera eye traverses different surfaces from the urban streetscape to the underground to the cosmos. Within this virtual landscape, glitches exist that are virtual …
Every Change, Ruhan Feng
Every Change, Ruhan Feng
Masters Theses
After being away from home for six years, distance and time make me reconsider: “Who am I?”
This thesis is an honest memoir, which records my reflections about life through my struggles, confusion with cultural identities, and conflicts with my mother in a one-child family. In a two-year graduate program, I continue to explore my identities as Chinese, an international student, an expatriate, and a daughter.
The text, accompanied by illustrations, interprets personal artistic changes. Printmaking in my work is not just a tool to make multiples. The ideas of layering and repeating are also applied to my three-dimensional installations …
From Florine To Flocking : Observations Of A Painter - Printmaker - Embellisher, Elizabeth King
From Florine To Flocking : Observations Of A Painter - Printmaker - Embellisher, Elizabeth King
Masters Theses
I am a painter-printmaker-embellisher. The hierarchy of these labels shift to best suit the needs of each piece. Making an image that encourages looking takes precedent over how it is labeled. A quickly read painting is the enemy. I weave together complex passages on the surface to function as a speed bump, to slow down the viewer’s navigation of my paintings. I value color, pattern, and texture above a narrative. Borrowing the palette of Florine Stettheimer and the repetitive touch of Edouard Vuillard, my paintings teeter dangerously between being about the idea of decoration and being decorative. Domesticity, femininity, and …

Na'aseh : Ritual In Practice, Anna Henrick Karpatkin Benjamin
Masters Theses
This body of work is an exploration of Jewish identity through pattern and ritual. Pattern is used as a tool to question and reinterpret these actions. Drawings, prints and papercuts are created through repetitive and evolutionary actions performed over time.

My Fish Hat Kingdom, Mei Fung Elizabeth Chan
Masters Theses
This thesis book documents my personal and artistic research. As a Chinese contemporary printmaker, I consider my artworks embedded in Eastern and Western elements to revitalize my printmaking practice. T shape my art to reveal my Hong Kong identity by creating self-portraits. Instead of trying to capture a single moment and place in one image, I create multi-dimensional images in terms of both space and time. Inspired by Italian Early Renaissance altarpieces, I break up the images to suggest a narrative sequence. All of my prints are printed in large scale so that my viewers will be engaged in each …
Lesser Than Greater Than Equal To: The Art Design Paradox, Charles Lee Franklin Harris
Lesser Than Greater Than Equal To: The Art Design Paradox, Charles Lee Franklin Harris
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Alongside a Masters of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Greater Than Lesser Than Equal To, this dossier has five components: an introduction to the dossier, an extended artist statement, documentation of my work with an introduction, an interview with Sean Caulfield and my Curriculum Vitae. Together they present and illustrate my research around the question of art and design, and a brief exploration of how they operate (mutually and competitively) within the everyday of contemporary North America. As well, they allude to how my work developed in its present form. Through the “print-structures”, I explore the nature of design and art …
Cycles Of Growth And Decay, And Changing The Beautiful To The Grotesque: Installation Through The Lens Of Printmaking, Madeline R. Cochran
Cycles Of Growth And Decay, And Changing The Beautiful To The Grotesque: Installation Through The Lens Of Printmaking, Madeline R. Cochran
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
The intention of this project is to create an installation informed by printmaking processes and to explore the tension between what is fragile and delicate and what is decaying and visceral. Specifically, I am working with materials I find delicate and beautiful including: fine Japanese paper, lace, yarn and embroidery floss. I am coating and manipulating these materials with wax, epoxy-resin and baby oil to give the work a fleshy and unsettling feel. Through the process of working with these materials, I have created paper sculptures made from a mold cast from my own torso, miniature books made from monoprints …
To The Moon And Back, Michael Tyler Pennekamp
To The Moon And Back, Michael Tyler Pennekamp
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Almost fifty years after the Apollo 11 mission, the moon landing remains one of humankind’s most remarkable technological achievements. On the lunar surface, the Eagle’s flight crew left behind an American flag, mementos honoring those who lost their lives in the quest for such an achievement, and a plaque reading, “Here men from the planet Earth set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” Despite overwhelming proof of this achievement—radio transmissions, photographs, film, rock and soil samples—a sizable minority of Americans continue to view the Apollo 11 moon landing as a hoax. To …

Schmucker Art Catalogs
José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913) was one of Mexico’s most influential political printmakers and cartoonists. Posada produced an extensive body of imagery, from illustrations for children’s games to sensationalistic news stories. He is best known, however, for his popular and satirical representations of calaveras (skeletons) in lively guises, who have become associated with the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Posada’s prints shaped generations of Mexican artists including the muralists Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. This exhibition features a range of prints and print media including calaveras, chapbooks, political prints, devotional images, and representations of natural disasters …
I Am The Luchadora: Countering Exotification Through Printed Installation, Margaret Landa Middleton
I Am The Luchadora: Countering Exotification Through Printed Installation, Margaret Landa Middleton
Honors Papers
In this body of work I use printmaking to look critically at the commercial consumption of Mexican culture in popular media, using my own experience as a mixed Mexican-American as a lens. I consider how my experience of cultural identity, family history, and assimilation has complicated my interaction with Mexican culture within the United States. My work questions how cultural identity is reduced to stereotypes, employing the reproducibility of print to mimic the proliferation of simplified and exotified portrayals of Mexican-Americans in popular culture. I attempt to contradict this assumed cultural experience by producing work that asserts my own. By …

The Archive, Hailey Cecilia Christian Hodge
The Archive, Hailey Cecilia Christian Hodge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Archive is an installation that considers the human brain’s potential to distort memory over time. Memories from our past can be changed by our current atmosphere, manipulated by our emotions towards the experience, or can altogether be forgotten. Humans explore the world through their eyes, making mental photographs to help them navigate the future through the experiences of their past. However, the human memory is faulty at best. We all have memories stored, false memories that we believe, and we continue to create new memories every moment. This body of work is exploring how the passage of time and …
This System Has Failed Us, Kate Murray Bickhardt
This System Has Failed Us, Kate Murray Bickhardt
Senior Projects Spring 2017
When I go to a courtroom the only color I see is orange. I don’t want to talk down to people. The projection is level to the floor. There are 2,500 napkins. They are the people, the garbage, and the repetition of the excess, and my hope of giving them importance. There are roughly 2,500 people in the Orleans Parish Prison on any given day, but the system is bigger than them. It’s more consuming and this is not nearly the amount of napkins it would take to represent the people in even just one state's carceral system. The space …

Just as music can be described as colorful and text can provide texture, art has a voice. That voice can scream, whisper or babble incoherently. It can also sing. Making art sing is the overarching goal of all my work. There are no formulas or templates, of which I am aware, on how to accomplish this but if I think of individual pieces as songs, a series as an album and exhibits as concerts art can become sonorous. Shadows and highlights act as rhythm. Color and composition behave as melodies and arrangements. If I've done my job correctly the art …
