The History And Evolution Of Athletic Uniforms And Equipment 1800s - Present: Basketball, Baseball, Football, And Hockey, Emily Anderson
Honors Theses
For my Lee Honors College Thesis at Western Michigan University, I researched the history and evolution of athletic uniforms and equipment. I choose this topic because not only does it relate to my major in Textile & Apparel Studies, it also appealed to me, a lifelong sports fan. I utilized various resources while conducting my research. These resources included books as well as communication with the curator at the WMU Archives and Regional History Collections. I was also in direct contact with the equipment directors for various WMU athletic teams. I presented all of my findings in an exhibit format …
Ghost2, Matthew Klepac

The Hilltop Review
I'm a ghost; unseen, unheard, untie me
Untimely demise, one word describes me
Damaged; a phantom I float over rhythm
Vanish in thin air and reappear like apparitions
I'm at the mercy of a vengeful god, a lost soul
I float alone unnoticed in this city of ghosts
Those kids all thought they knew me so I tried to fit the mold
But conformity's a fake ID and loneliness is cold
The Heroine's Journey, Catherine Bailey
The Heroine's Journey, Catherine Bailey
The Hilltop Review
My current research focuses on representations of gender in contemporary literature and visual culture, with a particular emphasis on feminist criticism. Furthermore, I am interested in the ways in which ancient mythology, fairy tales, and folklore have shaped--and continue to shape--societal ideals about normative gender behavior. While some myth critics profess the benefits of framing one's life in terms of a grand narrative--an archetypal "hero's journey"--feminist critics and queer theorists argue that these sweeping narratives can be damaging to people of all genders by forcing them into limiting social scripts. Much of my recent research has explored the question of …
Local Identity, Melissa A. Phizacklea
Local Identity, Melissa A. Phizacklea
Honors Theses
Buying local is the first step preventing numerous economical and environmental issues and is becoming more crucial every moment. Unfortunately, independent businesses face unprecedented competition from larger competitors that enjoy national or international branding power. Local governments, chambers and independent business networks have recently launched hundreds of buy-local campaigns to increase awareness on these issues. Regrettably, most campaigns quickly fade away with little or no impact on shifting local culture.
With this idea in mind I am proposing to explore and develop a permanent local identity that will endorse a number of local brands. This identity highlights the individual local …
Creating Original Garments Using Couture Sewing Methods, Nicole S. Eckerson
Creating Original Garments Using Couture Sewing Methods, Nicole S. Eckerson
Masters Theses
As part of my research, I examined the techniques and methods used in couture sewing from the past to the present, drawing inspiration from historical couture garments by designers Charles Worth (19th century designer) and Charles James (20th century designer). The four pieces I drew inspiration from include Charles Worth and Bobergh’s evening gown (1861), Charles Frederick Worth’s evening gown (1883), and Charles James’s “Butterfly” ball gown (1954) and “Swan” ball gown (1954). These designers were chosen based on their use of structure and form throughout their pieces. After researching couture sewing methods and using the gowns mentioned above for …

The Hilltop Review
This drawing—painted on the surface of one of the interior doors located in the first floor at East Hall—shows the preoccupation of people about the uncertain future of East Campus. In one way or another, it has kept awake my sensibility toward how educational institutions can affect community not only academically, but also personally, and how people consider education as a one of the foremost elements for progress. Location: East Hall, First Floor. Original painting by unknown artist.
