Narrative Convergence, Cross-Sited Productions And The Archival Dilemma, Marc Ruppel Jan 2009

Narrative Convergence, Cross-Sited Productions And The Archival Dilemma, Marc Ruppel

David Phung

This article addresses the speculative role of digital preservation from the standpoint of convergent literatures. `Cross-sited narratives', multimodal stories told across media channels, are introduced here as a specific mode of narrative instrumentality. It is argued that contemporary models of the archive structured on organizational models such as genetic criticism and on preservational models such as emulation and migration are not equipped to handle cross-sited works, as they are premised on mono-media sensibilities. Primarily exploring Mark Danielewski's House of Leaves (2000) and Neil Young's Greendale (2003), two works that resist digitization both materially and thematically, the claim is made that …

Diabolical Frivolity Of Neoliberal Fundamentalism, Sefik Tatlic Jan 2009

Diabolical Frivolity Of Neoliberal Fundamentalism, Sefik Tatlic

Sefik Tatlic

Today, we cannot talk just about plain control, but we must talk about the nature of the interaction of the one who is being controlled and the one who controls, an interaction where the one that is “controlled” is asking for more control over himself/herself while expecting to be compensated by a surplus of freedom to satisfy trivial needs and wishes. Such a liberty for the fulfillment of trivial needs is being declared as freedom. But this implies as well the freedom to choose not to be engaged in any kind of socially sensible or politically articulated struggle.

DER PRESSBENGEL/THE BONE FOLDER: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN AN AESTHETICALLY- INCLINED BIBLIOPHILE AND A WELL-VERSED-IN-ALL-ASPECTS-OF-THE- CRAFT BOOKBINDER

By Ernst Collin, translated and introduced by Peter D. Verheyen

Der Pressbengel, by Ernst Collin, was originally published in German in 1922. This is its first translation into English. Conceived as a dialogue between a bibliophile and a master bookbinder on all aspects of the bookbinding craft as well as specific techniques, the text also addresses the conflicts between quality and cost and matters of good taste. An introduction by the translator discusses the historical context of the decline of formal training, a trend …

Don Reitz: Out Of The Ashes, Jo Farb Hernandez

Jo Farb Hernandez

The writer discusses the work of ceramic sculptor Don Reitz on the occasion of an exhibition of his work at the Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery at San Jose State University in San Jose, California, from October 28 to December 19, 2008. Over the past 50 years, Reitz has worked unflaggingly, investigating different clays, types of firing, and ceramics traditions. This master technician and unique potter opts to dramatically alter his thrown forms, manipulating classic contours by pushing, pulling, stabbing, marking, and painting.

Eschatalogicallandscape, Kirby Farrell Prof Dec 2008

Eschatalogicallandscape, Kirby Farrell Prof

kirby farrell

Nazi obsession with art can be understood as a strategy for managing death-anxiety. The venerable trope of "immortal art" took on fetishistic qualities in the fantasies of the Nazi leadership. For many of them, art compensated for the trauma of World War I by framing idealized vitality invested with visionary self-expansiveness, as in the hyperbolic nudes of Thorak and Brekker, combined with a nostalgic recuperation of lost Victorian-era authority. In Ernest Becker’s terms, as creaturely motives, the manic looting of art works described in Lynn Nicholas’ The Rape of Europa acts out greed for life, appropriating hypostatized vitality as the …
