Introduction

American printmaking experienced a surge in popularity during the 1920s and 1930s, when many artists began looking to their own environments as subject matter. Urban and country life, realistic or idealized, appeared in the work of Social Realist and Regionalist artists. Their images were used as illustrations for novels, poetry, short stories and advertisements.
