An Approach To Wire Using Textile Techniques, Toni Vallette-Satterfield

Masters Theses

Wire can be used in the same way as fiber in many textile processes. Wire is used to gain the same richness of texture that is exhibited in fibers and to capture the light reflective quality of the textile techniques.

The following processes are not for beginning students. Much experimentation went into the research for each technique. The first method is coiling. This technique is a single-element stitch process (without the needle), worked continuously over a core. Hurricane Designed Is a project that deals with advertising graphics, their forms and adaptations, and relates them to their environment. Herein Is an explanation of the development and procedures of this project as It grew out of an interest In natural history and a pursuit of elegance in design. The procedures taken in designing and constructing the costumes for Western Kentucky University’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was presented on November 13-19, 1979, were examined in retrospect to (1) the approach (2) the process and construction and (3) the evaluation. In establishing an approach for the production, considerations presented were title implications, thematic concept, historical periods, character sources, and the director’s notes. Solutions arrived at comprised a style suggestion, design/plot emphasis, color organization, texture contrasts, and line direction. RISD Events was a bi-weekly publication focusing primarily on putting out a calendar of events happening in and around the school. The issue of March 12-March 26, 1980 included an article called The 18/20 Proposal. The RISD Student Council put forth a resolution calling for 18 year olds to be able to drink in bars but 20 year olds could purchase liquor in a liquor store. Also included was an activities calendar for events on the RISD campus and the Providence area.
