Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager
Aesthetics In Culture, Dan Rager
Dan Rager
This article examines the role of aesthetics in art, music, non-art objects, and activities in daily life. It shows that recognition is vital to our understanding of art and art-objects and sometimes creates conflicts which ask, what does one do with art? The question becomes more confusing when we think about non-art objects and activities which concern our everyday experiences from eating, clothing, cleaning and dealing with life's natural elements. The author points out that Western cultures have a distinct artworld that is usually limited for special occasions set aside for that purpose. He suggests that aesthetics in culture is …
Innovative Representations Of Light, Behaving As Both Particles And Waves, Among The Paintings Of Monet And Renoir, Charles Smith
Innovative Representations Of Light, Behaving As Both Particles And Waves, Among The Paintings Of Monet And Renoir, Charles Smith
Charles Kay Smith
Monet and Renoir, friends collaborating in open air about 1865, discovered that sunlight filtering through a canopy of tree leaves does not produce the splotches and dapples that studio artists conventionally represented at the time but circles of light. Sometimes the circles of light punctuating the shade are clear, separate and crisp, as though light is being propagated as particles, but if the pin-hole gaps between leaves are very close together, they will project compound or superimposed circles that look like the waves that Thomas Young saw in his double slit experiment in 1803-4. Newton’s Opticks published in 1704 had …

The conservation field has articulated the importance of publishing our research to disseminate information and further the aims of conservation. Article X of AIC’s Code of Ethics states that conservators should “contribute to the evolution and growth of the profession, a field of study that encompasses the liberal arts and the natural sciences” in part by “sharing of information and experience with colleagues, adding to the profession’s written body of knowledge.” Our Guidelines for Practice state “the conservation professional should recognize the importance of published information that has undergone formal peer review,” because, as Commentary 2.1 indicates, “publication in peer-reviewed …

Design Epilogues, Andreas Luescher
Andreas Luescher
The booklet tries to explain the generally unrecognized aspect of a studio experience that stitches together the most salient elements of the individual design projects into one coherent narrative. Design epilogues attempt to borrow something from each project that can be used to create something new.

Centennial Notecards, Anne Giangiulio

From the over 30 watercolor drawings I did of buildings on The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) campus, 24 were selected to be made into high-quality deckle edged blank notecards. The cards are sold on campus in 4 separate packages of 6 cards each for $18 as part of UTEP's Centennial celebration in 2014. These same drawings also became a silk scarf (see also "Silk Scarf designed for UTEP's Centennial Celebration" under the "2013 Portfolio in Depth" header).

Chalk The Block 2014 Poster, Anne Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
I designed this poster for the annual Chalk the Block event which took place October 10–October 12, 2014 in downtown El Paso. For the pop-up gallery component of the event, I organized a group of 10 students from my 'Graphic Design 4: Typography' class at The University of Texas at El Paso. Their posters were judged and selected to be on sale in a downtown outdoor booth for the three-day weekend event. All proceeds from the sale of the posters went directly to the students.
Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger
Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger
Mary Ann Bolger
This essay examines Patrick Scott’s work as a designer in mid-twentieth century Ireland. It focuses in particular on the work of one of Ireland’s first modern design consultancies, Signa, where Scott was the general design consultant. The paper argues that Signa’s designs provided an early model for a design vocabulary that could be, in the words of the British design critic Herbert Read, both “Irish and contemporary”.

Aesthetic Functionality And Genericism, Charles E. Colman
Aesthetic Functionality And Genericism, Charles E. Colman
Charles E. Colman
This presentation, the basis for a working article, begins by positing that U.S. trademark law's denial of exclusive rights in "generic" words and phrases is, in essence, a proxy for what might be called "linguistic functionality." In other words, the doctrine of genericism is simply one iteration of trademark law's general principle that no one may claim exclusive rights where recognition of such rights would produce anticompetitive results. Unfortunately, when it comes to non-word marks -- and perhaps most notably, product-design "trade dress" -- courts have neglected to establish a uniform, coherent, and fully theorized test for evaluating "genericism." The …

Article (in German) provides biographical details about the life of Ernst Collin, son and grandson of Prussian and German court bookbinders, who was one of the leading writers in the field of bookbinding and the history of the book in the period between the World Wars.
On April 1, 2014 two Stolpersteine (Stumbling Blocks) were laid to memorialize Ernst Collin and his wife Else (nee Cronheim) in front of the entrance to their home at Cicerostr 61 in Berlin. Stolpersteine are “monuments created by Gunter Demnig that commemorate victims of the Holocaust. They are small, cobblestone-sized memorials for an individual …

House Of Purple Cedar, Anne M. Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover, author signed book plates, and interior template I designed for 'House of Purple Cedar' by Tim Tingle, published by Cinco Puntos Press. "The hour has come to speak of troubled times. It is time we spoke of Skullyville." Thus begins House of Purple Cedar, Rose Goode’s telling of the year when she was eleven in Indian country, Oklahoma. Skullyville, a once-thriving Choctaw community, was destroyed by land-grabbers, culminating in the arson on New Year's Eve, 1896, of New Hope Academy for Girls. Twenty Choctaw girls died, but Rose escaped. She is blessed by the presence of her grandmother …
Cold Type, Anne M. Giangiulio
Cold Type, Anne M. Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover and interior template I designed for 'Cold Type' by Harvey Araton, published by Cinco Puntos Press. "In times of change, American novelists return to old themes. In Cold Type—as in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman—a son and his father struggle to hold onto what they think is right. It's mid-1990s; and "cold type" technology, a.k.a. computerized typesetting, wreaks havoc among workers in the newspaper industry. A fabulously wealthy Briton buys the New York City Trib and immediately refuses to negotiate with the truck drivers' union. In solidarity, all the other blue collar unions take to the streets. …

A Tightly Raveled Mind, Anne M. Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover and interior template I designed for 'A Tightly Raveled Mind' by Diane Lawson, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Sigmund Freud would have liked Dr. Nora Goodman, a sexy forty-something psychoanalyst with her handful of neurotic patients who can't seem to allow themselves happiness, love, or success. She's not exactly a steady customer herself, born to a ranting bipolar Talmudic scholar and a mother with a heart as cold as a slaughterhouse on the Kansas prairie in January. But now she has two kids and an overbearing psychiatrist husband. She hates him. She hates his insular social world. Nora …

Book cover and interior template I designed for 'Slump' by Kevin Waltman, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Derrick Bowman's sophomore year is a grind. He's been looking forward to the basketball season all summer, but his girlfriend Jasmine leaves him for putting too much focus on basketball. The promise his Marion East basketball team showed at the end of last season isn't materializing. And the sweet jumper D-Bow worked on all summer just isn't falling. When Derrick's father has a heart attack, Derrick is faced with a new reality where basketball can't be his only priority. 'Slump' is the second …

Work For '10 Squared: 100 Artists Celebrate Utep's Centennial', Anne M. Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
I was invited as one of 100 artists to create a 10" x 10" work to commemorate the Centennial of the University of Texas at El Paso as part of the exhibition "10 Squared" by the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. I created an original design proclaiming "Go Miners!" in reverse backstitch embroidered on stretched burlap. All proceeds from the sale supported the Rubin Center's education and outreach programming, bringing the experience of contemporary art to a diverse and growing audience of all ages.

The Black Butterfly, Anne M. Giangiulio
Anne M. Giangiulio
Book cover and interior template I designed for 'The Black Butterfly' by Shirley Reva Vernick, published by Cinco Puntos Press. "When Penny's flaky, ghost-hunting mother sends her to a "friend's" inn in Maine for Christmas break, Penny doesn't believe in ghosts…or love…or family. That may all be about to change as Penny confronts her own supernatural gift, an alluring guy, and staggering family secrets. But will she lose her first love, her only parent, or her life in the process?"
