The Nazi Aesthetic: Nuance And Contradiction In Systematic Art Theft And Collection Efforts, Katharine J. Namon
The Nazi Aesthetic: Nuance And Contradiction In Systematic Art Theft And Collection Efforts, Katharine J. Namon
Senior Theses and Projects
Nazi art collecting and looting was a strong and persistent undercurrent throughout World War II. The public and private practices of Nazi officials reveal both their aesthetic tastes and obsession with establishing themselves as highly educated, cultured patrons of the arts. Although the party’s artistic preferences are hard to define, it is evident that their stance on what constituted fine art and culture was entirely illogical, inconsistent, and incongruent. By examining their motives for acquiring such an astounding amount of art, the artistic tastes of individual Nazi officials, and the public exhibitions they held to advertise their values, one can …
Athenian Graffiti And The Right To The City: The Illegal Practice Of Public Space Reclamation, Lillia Schmidt
Athenian Graffiti And The Right To The City: The Illegal Practice Of Public Space Reclamation, Lillia Schmidt
Senior Theses and Projects
Graffiti is not often thought of as a positive tool for change, especially in the era of urban neoliberalism. Rather, it is regarded by such forces as harmful to the urban fabric, a signifier of urban decline and a crime progenitor. While neoliberalization threatens the authenticity of the urban through privatization and appropriation, graffiti has the potential to reclaim and reappropriate public urban spaces. How can graffiti be used as a tool to enforce Lefebvre’s theory of authentic urban space? Simultaneously, how does graffiti combat the processes of urban homogenization and commodification at the hands of the state and the …
Under The Microscope: Painting From Histology, Meg Smith
Under The Microscope: Painting From Histology, Meg Smith
Senior Theses and Projects
My goal as an artist is to create paintings which explore the intersections of biology, philosophy, aesthetics, and personal experience. I want to challenge the viewer to engage with their own anatomy and physiology on a microscopic scale. I also aspire to communicate my sense of awe and wonder at the structures and mechanisms of life on every scale, from the cellular to the cosmic.
I am deeply interested in how physiological processes generate the human experience
—I became a neuroscience major because I was interested in the mechanisms of sensation and perception. My love of histology—the study of the …

The Home As An Object: Material Culture In The Age Of Ikea, Maxwell Harling Fertik
The Home As An Object: Material Culture In The Age Of Ikea, Maxwell Harling Fertik
Senior Theses and Projects
The curiosity of everyday objects looms large in every human’s life. And naturally, these objects are almost as diverse in character as the person who bought them. This variation can be in style, period, shape, origin but also in the arrangement it is given in relation to other objects or persons in a space. On one level, the objects we surround ourselves with are meaningless, purely functional, utilitarian and banal. Especially on a budget, one may not consider aesthetic or design issues at all and purely buy a toaster because they want toast. Why would one buy a SMEG+Dolce and …
Henri Matisse And His Women Before The Window, Sophie Goodwin
Henri Matisse And His Women Before The Window, Sophie Goodwin
Senior Theses and Projects
Following World War I, Henri Matisse moved to the South of France to escape the chaotic terrain of post-war Paris. It was in the idyllic Nice where the artist would reveal a "return to naturalism" with his motif of contemplative women before an open window. Uniting portraiture, decorative interiors and landscapes in one composition, Matisse dually investigates the theme of interiority, while providing the viewer with the aesthetic delights, available for his delectation.
