Cultivating Engagement Through Student-Centered Learning In A High School Media Art Class, Dyane Goldman
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Student-centered-learning is a broad term for an approach to education where students are independent, self-directed learners (Krueger, 2014). This active environment is invigorating, energizing and filled with students deeply engaged in the work at hand. Educators are leaning towards embracing methods that foster independence in their students and in turn, these methods are proving to be effective in cultivating an atmosphere of engagement in all types of learners.
This study assessed implementation of opportunities for self-directed learning, and evaluated student interest and engagement in classroom activities. A review of the literature indicates that adapting this approach can be effective in …
Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble
Literacy Revolution: How The New Tools Of Communication Change The Stories We Tell, Molly Gamble
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
The transmission of culture depends upon every generation reconsidering what it means to be literate. The way we consider ourselves to be a literate species is changing, which puts us at a unique turning point in human history. Verbal literacy, or the ability to read and write, is slowly being replaced by visual literacy as a primary tool for human communication. As a culture, we tend to underestimate the creative ferment of our increasingly visual world. The linear, structured pathways of traditional literacy are shifting towards a creative and participatory pursuit of unstructured information that emphasize dimensional thinking. The acceleration …
The Sustainable Future Of The Modern Fashion Industry, Zhanna Kutsenkova
The Sustainable Future Of The Modern Fashion Industry, Zhanna Kutsenkova
Honors Theses
Sustainable fashion is a recent movement within the fashion industry that aims to reduce textile waste and environmental depletion while increasing ethical treatment of workers; the goal is to slow down the global production and consumption process in order to form an industry that will be more sustainable in the long run. Along with the development of more socially and eco-conscious production and marketing practices, there is still room for the sustainable fashion movement to grow beyond its current scope. With the support of growing information networks and brand transparency consumers will be better equipped than ever before to make …

"Mandala Paintings"
4 paintings, 30" x 30", Mixed Media on Panel
Statement:
I’ve been blessed with an extremely extensive travel log that exposed me to a broad scope of cultures, and more importantly, their art. A few years ago after returning from an especially inspiring trip to rural India, I began creating mandalas. At first these mandalas incorporated other classic Indian designs and patterns, similar to a henna tattoo. Overtime, I found solace in getting lost in creating mandala patterns and tuning out the rest of the world.

I remember like it was yesterday. It was late on a hot Friday afternoon in mid-
August and the sun was shining with the fierceness that August is notorious for, even in Northern California. Everywhere I looked there were trees and flowers and beautiful lawns. ~excerpt from short story

Each January, the frog pond calls to me. I drive across town to the Discovery
Center parking lot, put on my mud shoes, breathe in the damp, leafy air, and step away from my everyday world. ~excerpt from short story

In just three short weeks I traveled upwards of 8000 miles of rail, circulating around an antiquated network of industrial savagery, from Oakland CA to Oakland CA, trading stories and cigarettes with other wayward travelers while waiting for more important trains of cattle and produce to take the tracks. ~excerpt from short story

She still wakes up some nights in cold sweats with a scream rising like bile in her throat, waiting to fling itself out into the world. Sometimes she’s awake enough to hold it back and sometimes she can even fall asleep again. Sometimes, she can’t. ~excerpt from short story

Our love is the strongest.
And it has forced us into this undying relationship.
The disease that ravaged the country
Somehow, it brought us closer. ~excerpt from poem

A foreign land that I was unfamiliar with,
Full of green lush and the smell of diesel.
Trucks driving swiftly carrying bundles of plantains
Nothing was the same. ~excerpt from poem

My sandals stomp slowly up the temple stairs.
One foot after the other I walk almost unaware

Each one unique and could stand on its own. ~excerpt from poem

The fringes of the velvet petals brush up against the timeless bone-white bark. Her slender hand trembles, naked as it is without the gleaming ring she had dreamt of so often. There were two roses. One stark and wilting with its fleeting beauty, covering up the gaping scar. It was left at the graveside. ~excerpt from poem

It began with the long, silent drive past endless

the landscape of Down East Maine like seagulls
swarming a freshly pulled pot, like canvas tents
on the small island that was my summer home. ~excerpt from poem

Because I'm a nice person
