1916 Easter Rising And The Reconceptualization Of Memory, Siobhan Doyle

Like many countries, Ireland has a chaotic and tumultuous past which results in challenges for the state in presenting history to satisfy the education and expectation of both national and international audiences. The years between 1912 and 1922 were arguably the most transformative in modern Irish history as it was a decade of war, revolution and rapid social change. The 1916 Easter Rising- a failed rebellion against British rule- is synonymous as a moment in the past which represents Irish history, characterizes Irish culture and amplifies national identity. My paper will explore how the centenary commemorations of this historic event …

This postcard was created with information to pass out to potential Institute Fellows applying for the 2016 Storytellers' Institute.
Details about the 2016 Storytellers' Institute:
The theme for the 2016 Storytellers' Institute is "fact and fiction." Documentary films, podcasts, exhibitions and other works are evidence-based stories, working with facts to render, reveal, and represent truth(s) to inform and, at times, inspire action. Despite relying on real people, events and events documentaries engage because of the way they interpret and represent reality (Lamarre 2009). In the words of John Grierson (1926) (considered the father of the term "documentary"), a documentary film …

Description: Artist Bill Daniel has been touring with bands, film shows, installations and pop-up photo shows for 30 years. The logistics of booking and producing road shows will be discussed, as well as designing and developing visual and media-based events that can travel and set up easily. DIY attributes if self-reliance, mutual support and working out …

Who is Bozo Texino? chronicles the search for the source of a ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti— a simple sketch of a character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, “Bozo Texino”— a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel’s gritty black and white film uncovers a secret society and it’s underground universe of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with legendary boxcar artists Colossus of Roads, Coaltrain, Herby, and The Rambler.
Shooting over a 16-year period, Daniel rode freights across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex. During his quest he …

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
A linguistic landscape signifies language used within a physical or virtual public space, in which communication is presented in typographic form, portraying a message to an audience. Within the state of Israel, the linguistic landscape presents a unique situation in which it is common to view municipal and commercial multilingual signs that are designed using Hebrew, English, and Arabic letterforms. By studying the diverse linguistic landscape within Israeli urban environments, the article offers perspectives on the use of multilingual visual language, based on discussions with five Israeli designers in the summer of 2015.

This article suggests that comic scholars and historians of American culture take a closer look at Winsor McCay’s A Pilgrim’s Progress by Mister Bunion. Known as the father of animation and the artistic virtuoso behind the classic children’s comic Little Nemo in Slumberland, McCay actually did most of his comic work for adults. Published in the daily The New York Evening Telegram, McCay’s adult works included Dream of the Rarebit Fiend (1904-1911), A Pilgrim’s Progress by Mr. Bunion (1905-1909) and Poor Jake (1909-1911). McCay signed his work for adults as Silas and all three explored themes rooted in …
