The Psychos, Paula N. Stevenson May 2019

The Psychos, Paula N. Stevenson

Graduate School of Art Theses

My current body of work is a series of drawings that juxtapose characters of fiction and reality in an attempt to explore the relationship between horror film and contemporary social issues. I strive to render an accurate portrayal of the face to draw the viewer into questioning the troubling narrative these characters illuminate. I focus on retelling stories of fear and horror, and crime and infamy. I want my work to convey ethical dilemmas as they are present within the relationship between horror movie antagonists and the audience (all of us). It is these concerns I attempt to visualize in ...

Universe Of Things: A Human Presentation Of Food-For-Thought., Madeline Halpern May 2019

Universe Of Things: A Human Presentation Of Food-For-Thought., Madeline Halpern

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

I present this statement under three loose categories: People, Objects and their Environment. I consider People as human, Objects as art objects, domestic objects, and food, and Environment as the shared space of the former groups. Food directs this statement as I present each concept and creative process as a metaphorical dish. Material exploration carried me from a direct practice of reorienting acrylic paint and questioning object functionality through personified sculptures into theoretical thesis work in which I use interpersonal relations and the idea of consumption to translate tactile, gustatory and olfactory sensations into digital film. In this meal I ...

From Chinese Painting To Wearable Art: The Development Of Wearable Art Design Process Model And Evaluation Methods For Wearable Art Designers, Ling Zhang May 2019

From Chinese Painting To Wearable Art: The Development Of Wearable Art Design Process Model And Evaluation Methods For Wearable Art Designers, Ling Zhang

Ling Zhang

Wearable art is “art composed of materials structured so they can be worn on the body and that exhibit visually exciting design elements and principles” (Bryant & Hoffman, 1994, P.86). It is a unique (Becker, 1987) and visible symbol that not only depicts the mood of a designer, but also communicates her/his belief, life style, culture, knowledge, and aesthetic tastes to the world. The goals of creating this wearable art collection were to: (a) incorporate traditional Chinese Xie Yi painting themes, ideals or motifs into modern fashion designs with the silhouettes of Western clothing through the use of a ...

Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives On How The Use Of Toon Comic Books During Guided Reading Influenced Learning By Struggling Readers, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker, Samantha Mcgeorge Apr 2019

Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives On How The Use Of Toon Comic Books During Guided Reading Influenced Learning By Struggling Readers, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker, Samantha Mcgeorge

Gina Doepker

The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, specifically the TOON comic books during guided reading instruction. The instruction was provided to struggling readers by the Literacy Center at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. What most pre-service teachers in this study agreed upon was that comic books served as an effective tool for getting their students interested in reading. Reading comic books with tutors as partners in conversation with the struggling readers in this study was also a powerful medium for facilitating students’ literacy skills development, particularly in the areas of reading fluency and ...

Constraint And Control, Patricia Ayres Feb 2019

Constraint And Control, Patricia Ayres

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

I have long considered themes of the body. Drawing on my knowledge as a fashion designer, I bring materials and hardware from the fashion industry into my artwork transforming and rendering them non-functional. My sculptures relate to stories of isolation, separation, and confinement. The following pages will analyze how the United States penal system controls, constrains and restricts the body through physical and psychological wounds. Furthermore, they will examine how the Catholic Church controls people’s minds and behavior through a ritualistic belief system.

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua Jan 2019

Teaching Visual Literacies: The Case Of The Great American Dust Bowl, Mary F. Rice, Ashley K. Dallacqua

SANE journal: Sequential Art Narrative in Education

Teachers and students require a range of tools to engage with visual texts. Using The Great American Dust Bowlby Don Brown (2013) as an exemplar text, we outline four conceptions of visual literacy: rhetorical, instructional, industrial and visuo-spatial and discuss their use in our literacy education practice. In addition, we provide a brief model of a second text, The Arrival (Tan, 2013) and a list of suggested texts for students at different levels (elementary, middle, and high school). We argue that these tools have the potential to deepen conceptions of visual literacies and empower teachers and students to understand ...

Nigga Is Historical: This Is Not An Invitation For White People To Say Nigga, Sandy Williams Iv Jan 2019

Nigga Is Historical: This Is Not An Invitation For White People To Say Nigga, Sandy Williams Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several years I have been on a quest to locate a world beyond the one I’ve been presented. I am interested in the history of atomic particles - like everything that radiates off of a monument (both literally and those things that are metaphorically reified) - invisible things, and the ways in which these things insect beyond our knowledge systems. This inquiry takes many forms. Mine is a conceptually based practice linked to record keeping and time, and the ways in which these concepts find plurality within our culture; or more pointedly, the importance that we attach to ...

Americans Lost In America: Jose Rivera And The Meaning Of Home, Daniel Jimenez Jan 2019

Americans Lost In America: Jose Rivera And The Meaning Of Home, Daniel Jimenez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the fall semester of 2018, with artistic and financial support from the department of theatre, I directed a full production of Jose Rivera’s The House of Ramon Iglesia. The play concerns strained relationships within a family of Puerto Rican immigrants in New York. When the patriarch, Ramon, resists an overdue return to their native home, conflicting desires test bonds and open old wounds. I used the production to explore the meaning of “home” to disenfranchised, Latinx immigrants. Our company soon discovered that a universal answer will never satisfy everyone’s needs and desires. A constant search for home ...

Just A Coincidence? Whether Intention In Artistic Expression Alters Significance: An Analysis And Comparison Of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick And Matt Kish's Moby-Dick In Pictures: One Drawing For Every Page, Brittany Barnhouse Oct 2018

Just A Coincidence? Whether Intention In Artistic Expression Alters Significance: An Analysis And Comparison Of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick And Matt Kish's Moby-Dick In Pictures: One Drawing For Every Page, Brittany Barnhouse

Access*: Interdisciplinary Journal of Student Research and Scholarship

Using examples from Melville's Moby-Dick and Matt Kish's Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page, this paper explores how intention and coincidence contribute to perception of literature and art. There are too many patterns and details for certain aspects of Moby-Dick to be just a coincidence, and when the novel is viewed with this in mind, it changes the reader's relationship with the text and subsequently inspired artwork. By questioning the relationship with coincidence and intention as it relates to truth in storytelling and art, the reader by extension begins to question the very same in ...
