“Wind Chime” is a jacket and skirt ensemble for the professional woman that is suitable for day or evening wear. I was invited to create this ensemble as a guest designer for the Queen Sirikit Institute of Sericulture in Bangkok, Thailand. The purpose of the design was to showcase womenswear made from the highest quality Thai silk for an exhibition at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference to promote the new labeling standards and emblems recently developed by Thailand's Agriculture Ministry to authenticate Thai silk and protect it from imitations. The labeling emblems are affixed to the fabric ...

MOON GLOW is an eveningwear ensemble inspired by the colors and shapes in a 19th century Japanese wood block print of a moonlit lake and mountains, and by garment style lines from historic Chinese costume. Four fabric colors were used to create the geometric designs on the jacket to reflect the subtle shapes and colors in the picture. The asymmetric pattern on the center front and center back bands is an interpretation of the diagonal shapes of the landscape. The collar shape, and the contrasting front band, waistband, cuff, and hem are contemporary interpretations of style details seen in costume ...

1000 PIECES: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is a wearable art coat incorporating approximately 1000 removable pieces that may be assembled to create a variety of surface designs. The concept is based on a jigsaw puzzle. The aesthetic inspiration came from ancient Chinese armor composed of small metal scales decoratively arranged and affixed to a background fabric. The coat is designed especially for those who enjoy assembling a jigsaw puzzle or creating their own unique designs.

MOONLIGHT GARDEN is an original eveningwear ensemble featuring a suede jacket embellished with gold, silver, lilac, and green translucent and opaque ribbons woven through a series of shaped cuts in the fashion fabric to create flower buds, intertwining stems, and flying bug. Inspiration for the shapes of my flower motifs and stems came from a Dover Publications reprint of ART NOUVEAU GRAPHIC DESIGNS OF ALPHONSE MUCHA, PUBLISHED IN COMBINAISONS ORNEMENTALES [CA. 1900, PARIS]

The Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA had one of the largest displays of armor and arms in the western hemisphere. To enhance their educational programs and engage boys and girls of all ages in the life and times of the Museum's collection, which spans the period from the ancient Romans to the Renaissance. the Museum commissioned my research, drafting and construction of a children’s try-‐on collection of clothing based on the characters in the King Arthur Legends. Historic Costume Reproductions – Higgins Armory Museum, Arlene Handschuch

Arlene Handschuch

The Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, MA had one of the largest displays of armor and arms in the western hemisphere. To complement the armor on display in the main gallery and to enhance their educational programs, the Museum commissioned my research, drafting and construction of a collection of renaissance and medieval historic costume reproductions. The costumes are used under the armor exhibited on display forms, on horse display forms for jousting exhibits, for display with dog armor, for wear by the educational staff during their educational presentations and for images printed on postcards sold in the Museum’s gift ...
