This dissertation explores the catalytic relationships between dance, disability, and assistive technology design, foregrounding the ways in which dance practice/theory can provoke a re-imagination of both disability and the assistive device design. The research delves into the ways in which dance practice is ideally situated to continue intervening in negative constructions of disability by intentionally provoking current signifiers which reify the disabled body as dependent, restricted, tragic, static, and powerless. This chapter is an excerpt from my published dissertation. In the chapter, I propose a new paradigm for thinking about design: Embodied, Socio-Spatial Design (ESD) generated from a dance perspective. I use a Laban Movement Analysis framework to help flesh out this paradigm and I use these ideas to discuss and analyze a unique prototype wheelchair design for use in dance, with application outside of dance as well.

This is an excerpted chapter from my published dissertation. In the chapter, I discuss the ways in which the dance context in intersection with disabled bodies revises notions of assistive technology design. By looking at what dancers and choreographers working within the disability community are doing (or attempting to do) with the assistive device, and foregrounding the agency of the device, as another “body,” new conceptions for what the device can enable rise to the surface. C Reverse for Care is organized in a five part care cycle: Wash, Rinse, Spin, Dry, and Wear. The piece is a study in reversibility. It is an effort to learn, to understand what it means to care, and an effort to try to achieve reciprocal balance in any relationship, whether it is with a family member, a partner, or a friend.

By uncovering an example of the kind of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration that contributed to the thriving artistic environment of the early twentieth century, a model for artistic success emerges. Kinetic sculpture suggests new visual possibilities when combined with dance. Wishing to explore such avenues of interaction for sculpture, this artist sought to develop pieces that could be incorporated into choreography. An artist and a choreographer wove their concepts and styles together to create a performance art piece that rose from the reciprocal influences of interactive sculpture and dance. Translation is inevitably challenging work. When the human body and its movement are the subjects translated, the work may be particularly difficult, as questions both technical and ethical may arise about the representation in the second medium. Yet the exercise can also be very illuminating, creating space for insights that may not have been possible without the translation.
