How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D. Oct 2019

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D.

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

To resolve a moral dilemma created by the rescue of carnivorous species from exploitative situations who must rely on the flesh of other vulnerable species to survive, Cheryl Abbate applies the guardianship principle in proposing hunting as a case-by-case means of reducing harm to the rescued animal as well as to those animals who must die to supply food. This article counters that Abbate’s guardianship principle is insufficiently applied given its objectification of deer communities. Tom Regan, alternatively, encouraged guardians to think beyond individual dilemmas and adopt a measure of systemic reconstruction, that being the abolition of speciesist institutions ...

Dance Disability And Assistive Technology.Pdf, Merry L. Morris Jul 2017

Dance Disability And Assistive Technology.Pdf, Merry L. Morris

Merry L. Morris

This dissertation explores the catalytic relationships between dance, disability, and assistive technology design, foregrounding the ways in which dance practice/theory can provoke a re-imagination of both disability and the assistive device design. The research delves into the ways in which dance practice is ideally situated to continue intervening in negative constructions of disability by intentionally provoking current signifiers which reify the disabled body as dependent, restricted, tragic, static, and powerless. Specifically, I investigate one powerful signifier: the assistive device (e.g., wheelchair, crutch, prosthetic). I seek a critical endeavor into how disability perceptions may be transformed through dance by ...

Chapter Vi A Prototype Intervention- Towards An Embodied Socio-Spatial Design Paradigm.Docx, Merry L. Morris Jul 2017

Chapter Vi A Prototype Intervention- Towards An Embodied Socio-Spatial Design Paradigm.Docx, Merry L. Morris

Merry L. Morris

This chapter is an excerpt from my published dissertation. In the chapter, I propose a new paradigm for thinking about design: Embodied, Socio-Spatial Design (ESD) generated from a dance perspective. I use a Laban Movement Analysis framework to help flesh out this paradigm and I use these ideas to discuss and analyze a unique prototype wheelchair design for use in dance, with application outside of dance as well.

Chapter V Dance And Disability Meet Assistive Technology.Docx, Merry L. Morris Jul 2017

Chapter V Dance And Disability Meet Assistive Technology.Docx, Merry L. Morris

Merry L. Morris

This is an excerpted chapter from my published dissertation. In the chapter, I discuss the ways in which the dance context in intersection with disabled bodies revises notions of assistive technology design. By looking at what dancers and choreographers working within the disability community are doing (or attempting to do) with the assistive device, and foregrounding the agency of the device, as another “body,” new conceptions for what the device can enable rise to the surface. The words of “partnership,” “bodily extension,” and “helper,” were all themes which surfaced in my research defining the device relationship. From a dance lens ...

Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer May 2015

Lighting Design Proposal For Tom Stoppard's "Rosencratz And Guildenstern Are Dead", Nikolai Eiteneer

Nikolai B Eiteneer

Tom Stoppard’s tragicomedy, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1964), earned the early popularity and the world-wide reputation that such a work deserved, booting Tom Stoppard into the limelight as an up-and-coming young writer. The play itself verges on an absurdist style, but due to the realistic nature of the title characters, the audience members find themselves sympathizing with their plight and lack of knowledge though any theatre goer acquainted with the works of Shakespeare, and Hamlet in particular, will know the final outcome of the play. For those not endowed with such knowledge, however, Stoppard gave the end away ...
