I Come Creeping: Remembering The Battle Of Blair Mountain In Graphic Narrative, Ellie James
Senior Honors Theses
Between August 24 and September 4 of 1921, approximately 10,000 West Virginia coal miners marched to Blair Mountain in Logan County in a militant stand for their right to unionize. Despite its status as the largest labor uprising in United States history, few know or understand the impact of the Battle of Blair Mountain today, even within the borders of West Virginia. This creative project aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to memorialize this period of the West Virginia Mine Wars through the creation of a 10-page comic, titled I Come Creeping, which depicts and is informed by the …
Uniquely Korea: Retaining Visual Authenticity In Cultural Presentations, Deanna M. Cannon
Uniquely Korea: Retaining Visual Authenticity In Cultural Presentations, Deanna M. Cannon
Masters Theses
As educators and creators seek to introduce students to cultures from around the world to increase cultural awareness, visual media has also become a powerful tool to disseminate the visual culture of a people. When media misrepresents a culture, the introduction to the culture can be flawed and create more problems. How then can media creators ensure that their representations are accurate? This project proposes that careful research balanced with an observation of the culture’s visual presentations can help guide cultural representations toward authenticity. This research specifically explores the problem of misrepresenting traditional Korean culture in American media. The generalization …
Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will
Senior Honors Theses
Graphic designers have many choices when designing and communicating with words which can be seen throughout history. Hand lettering techniques have been used for centuries to record information. Then with the development of moveable type came the mass production of reading materials and the introduction of typefaces. Today, much written communication is viewed through a digitized typeface on a screen. However, there has recently been a noticeable increase in hand lettered type, one of these reasons being that hand lettered type can be easier for people to remember. This paper and the visual application of the research examines how hand …

Animal Heads: Exploring Christian Themed Solutions And Mental Health Through Comics, Mariannette Oyola-Perez
Masters Theses
The second leading cause of death for the ages of 10-24 is suicide, a statistic that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows has steadily risen since 1999. Although it is seldom spoken about in mental health circles, an enmity seems to exist between Christianity and modern psychology in regards to mental illness and how it should be treated; this enmity could be preventing helpful Christian-based principles from being shared with the at-risk population while simultaneously excluding Christians from a conversation they need to be a part of.
Interestingly, further research shows that the at-risk demographic overlaps significantly with …
Painting A Biblical Worldview In Children, Brook Blackwell
Painting A Biblical Worldview In Children, Brook Blackwell
Senior Honors Theses
Children are impressionable beings shaped by the changing world around them; this has become increasingly more true as the years progress and the impact and prevalence of media rises. Television shows, movies, music and books, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can play a tremendous part in the growth of children’s worldviews. It is important for authors and artists to delve deep into the impact of media on the growth and development of children in today’s media-rich world. In doing so, they should hope to find the best way to implement a Christian worldview into the media a child …

Herpes Zoster Patient Education: A Coloring Book Approach, Sophia Charuhas
Senior Honors Theses
Shingles, the disease caused by the herpes zoster virus, is a widespread and widely misunderstood illness in the United States. Many patient education materials on herpes zoster currently available are often unused. It is therefore beneficial to public health to disseminate new mediums of medical communication, and one way of accomplishing this is through adult coloring books.
