The project is a text-based game of a typical day during the first season of the 1964 World’s Fair in what is now Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. The group of work, Rising Water, Floating Islands is inspired by traditional Chinese scroll landscape paintings. The United States requisitioned artists to assist with military objectives and servicemen requisitioned art as a form of rhetoric. This research reexamines the role of “official artists” and thereby extends its definition to include the multitude of art they produced during the Second World War. This essay explores how Brazilian seamstress-turned-designer Zuzu Angel produced politically-engaged fashion collections as a means for processing her personal grief and denouncing the atrocities faced by the Brazilian youth during the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). After Angel's son Stuart, a leftist activist, was kidnapped and brutally tortured to death by the military regime, Zuzu began to incorporate allegorical details into her commercial fashion designs. These primarily took the form of delicate, seemingly naive embroidered images, such as angels, toy soldiers, ships and trucks- concealed synthesized references that expressed Angel's grief for her son and her country. The question of the different kinds of loom used in ancient Egypt is one of the most crucial issues to understanding the evolution of textile production and its technological development in the Nile Valley. However, sources concerning looms (archaeological, iconographic and written) from the Pharaonic era until the Arab medieval period are meagre, and many research questions remain open. This article is an attempt at a new interpretation of some evidence, particularly iconographic and papyrological, which could add new data to the study of weaving looms used in Egypt of the early Roman period (1st–2nd century AD).

The site of El-Deir is situated north of Kharga in the “Great Oasis” of the Egyptian Western Desert (fig. 1). The site was occupied between the 6th century BC and the 6th century AD. A complex history emerged with the influence of many cultures: Persian, Greek, Roman and early Christian. The Apology Dice is an interactive art performance that engages small groups in conversation—about Indian Residential Schools, colonialization, and possibilities of reconciliation— through the rolling of large, custom-made cedar dice. Each die is cast one at a time to form a sentence. The words on the first die read: “I am” / “We are” / “They are”. The second reads: “so” / “fairly” / “really” / “not” / “somewhat” / “deeply”. The First Year Seminar lays out “Communication Fluency” as one of the General Education Outcomes, and specifically invites students to: Demonstrate critical and creative strategies for generating and sharing meaning. Each individual class crafts their own assignments to achieve this objective. We spotlight two example assignments that both foster communication fluency, one inspired by the fine arts that explores African Art and a second from the social sciences that explores global development projects. Additionally, we show how to replicate these two assignments with a few personal modifications for classes beyond the traditional campus, at the Indiana Women’s Prison.

Lost & Found is a tabletop-to-mobile game series designed for teaching medieval religious legal systems. The long-term goals of the project are to change the discourse around religious laws, such as foregrounding the prosocial aspects of religious law such as collaboration, cooperation, and communal sustainability. This design case focuses on the evolution of the design of the mechanics and core systems in the first two tabletop games in the series, informed by over three and a half years’ worth of design notes, playable prototypes, outside design consultations, internal design reviews, playtests, and interviews.

Around AD 400 a group of Christians were looking for a new home. An abandoned Roman military fort at what is now called Abu Sha’ar, c. 20 km north of Hurghada on the Egyptian Red Sea coast, became the answer to their prayers. Steven Sidebotham of the University of Delaware excavated the site in 1987-1993. The fort had been established in AD 309-311 to house a mounted unit, the Ala Nova Maximiana, guarding the Via Nova Hadriana.
