Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen Mckinney Feb 2013

Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen Mckinney

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Conference Proceedings and Presentations

Practical experiences of traditional and emerging processes in creative pattern cutting can be successfully documented and promoted through case study. Case study is a comprehensive research strategy for investigating an empirical topic by following a set of pre-specified procedures (Yin, 1994). The case study method is different from research methods such as experiments and surveys where statistical generalization is used to extend the results to a larger population. In the case study method, analytic generalization is used to generalize from the case study to theoretical propositions. This paper explores reasons and solutions for undocumented pattern cutting knowledge. Pattern cutters mentally ...

The Determinants Of Textile And Apparel Export Performance In Asian Countries, Xinxin Wang Jan 2013

The Determinants Of Textile And Apparel Export Performance In Asian Countries, Xinxin Wang

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Since the end of the 20th century, textile and apparel retailers from developed countries have started to source globally instead of manufacturing products domestically to reduce costs and become more competitive in textile and apparel markets. However, since global sourcing has extended organizations' supply chains on a worldwide scale, other factors, such as suppliers' capability lead time, logistics service, and trade barriers, should also be seriously considered. Therefore, it is important for buyers to determine the comparative advantages of supplier countries, and suppliers to understand the determinants of their export performance to become more competitive in the era of ...

Understanding Second-Hand Retailing: A Resource Based Perspective Of Best Practices Leading To Business Success, Jinhee Han Jan 2013

Understanding Second-Hand Retailing: A Resource Based Perspective Of Best Practices Leading To Business Success, Jinhee Han

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Second-hand clothing has been traded since the Renaissance era, and widely consumed by a majority of the populace. However, very few studies concerning second-hand retailing and consumer preferences have been conducted, especially in the United States. The present study was conducted to understand second-hand retailers' current marketing practices, sourcing strategies, and resources that lead to their business success. Moreover, unique features and definitions of three specialized types of second-hand retailers (e.g., vintage stores, consignment stores, and thrift stores) were discussed through a typology.

Resource-based theory (RBT) (Barney, 1991) and the Four Experiential Realms (4Es) (Pine & Gilmore, 1999) were ...

Analysis Of Fitting Room Enviroments: Effects On Older Clothing Shoppers' Shopping Patronage Intention, Kyungnam Seo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to systematically analyze the influence of the fitting room environment on older clothing shoppers' psychic cost, satisfaction, and patronage intention. The objectives of this study were to determine whether current fitting rooms deliver appropriate services for older consumers, and whether a fitting room environment that accommodates the needs of older consumers better is associated with enhanced shopping satisfaction and consequent patronage intention. In addition, this study created a conceptual model integrating the S-O-R model and person-environment fit theories to provide an understanding of the causal relationship among fitting room accommodation, psychic cost, shopping ...

Competitiveness Of Textile And Apparel Industries In The United States And Japan, Juyoung Lee Jan 2013

Competitiveness Of Textile And Apparel Industries In The United States And Japan, Juyoung Lee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how the textile and apparel industry competitiveness in developed countries, namely the United States and Japan, related to trade and productivity between 1962 and 2010. The United States and Japan were selected for this study because of their similar economic development levels, each having its unique strategy to increase domestic textile and apparel industry competitiveness. This study proposed a theoretical framework based on competitive advantage theory, comparative advantage theory, and new growth theory to determine the relationship between trade balance and the principle goal of industrial competitiveness and between productivity and the ...

The Rise And Fall Of American Marionette Theatre: Conservation Of The Bil Baird Puppet Collection, 1918-1987, Katharine Celia Greder

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One part conservation assessment and one part historical background, this thesis stems from work conducted in the summer of 2012 at MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, Iowa. Funded by the Otto Thieme Scholarship from the Costume Society of America, the research offers a morphological study of the 400 puppets in the Bil Baird puppet collection. Spanning the period from 1918 to 1987, the puppets examined offer a survey of American history throughout the 20th century, in context as well as content. The research catalogued the constituent parts of the object with suggestions for conservation. In an effort to draw ...
