This study aims at investigating possible rules that govern code mixing between the two basic varieties (H and L; Ferguson, 1959) at the verbal phrase level (combining linguistic features of Fusha and ‘ammiya in spoken verbal sentences used in ‘ammiyat Al-Muthaqqafin). In this study, the feature of choice is the use of the b-prefix (an aspectual marker used as a prefix with present tense ‘ammiya verbs). In particular, this study aims at analyzing the possible rules that govern the use of the b-prefix from a linguistic perspective. This thesis compares an Italian and an Egyptian novel, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and Gamal al-Ghitani's Zayni Barakat, paying particular attention to the way European and Arabic historiographies influence their composition. Both set at the end of the Middle Ages, the two novels are taken as representatives of the way contemporary European and Arabic literature portray the past in relation to their present. Starting with a reconstruction of the two historiographic patterns based on Salvation and Progress, and their influencing the notion of literary Medievalism, the two novels are treated separately in order to contextualize them in …

Due to the increasing rates of single or still-unmarried women, also known as spinsters or Awanes, shaping the perceptions of these women is a problem facing Egyptian society. In this paper, the researcher assesses the effects of the media's depiction of these women, specifically focusing on the movie industry. By conducting a content analysis of Egyptian movies, as well as an examination of the notion of spinsters in language, history and culture, this study demonstrates the impact of movies in constructing a negative image and shaping the perception of unmarried women within Egyptian society. Since Quranic inscriptions dominate the epigraphic decoration of Cairene Islamic religious monuments, the target of this thesis has been to investigate the Quranic inscriptions of some selected religious monuments of each main era of the Islamic history of Cairo: Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman. The questions examined are the following: what was the frequency of utilizing Quranic inscriptions compared to other types of inscriptions? This thesis presents the 1919 revolution in Egypt and its effects on the Egyptian political arena as portrayed by the political cartoons during that period. The political cartoons portrayed a visual and tangible approach to a review of nationalism during this era. The cartoons also focused on Egyptian efforts to end British colonialism and imperialism. A review of the cartoons within a six-year period (1918- 1924) yielded one hundred and eighty-two political cartoons.
