Letter To Lemuel Shaw From John Prince, January 12, 1838, Lemuel Shaw Jan 1838

Letter To Lemuel Shaw From John Prince, January 12, 1838, Lemuel Shaw

The Correspondence of Lemuel Shaw

In this letter, John Prince thanks Lemuel Shaw for his friendly letter and seeks assurance that he still has a job at the letter's conclusion. This letter appears to be a response to another letter in this collection, dated January 10, 1838, in which the five justices of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court criticize an un-named court employee, probably Prince, for "indulging to excess in the use of ardent spirit". This item also includes a typescript of the letter annotated by Arthur P. Rugg, associate justice (1906-1911) and chief justice (1911-1938) of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Unsigned Letter To John Prince From The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, January 10, 1838, Massachusetts. Supreme Judicial Court

The Correspondence of Lemuel Shaw

This unsigned letter was written on behalf of the five justices of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The scribe criticizes one of the court's employees, most likely John Prince, for "indulging to excess in the use of ardent spirit" and threatens him with the loss of his appointment. Evidently the problem resolved itself, for Shaw served as Chief Justice for thirty years, from 1830 to 1860. Prince responds to this message in a letter dated January 12, 1838, which is also part of this collection. This item also includes a typescript of the letter annotated by Arthur P. Rugg ...

History Of The Captivity And Providential Release Therefrom Of Mrs. Caroline Harris, Caroline Harris

Electronic Texts in American Studies

Wife of the late Mr. Richard Harris, of Franklin County, State of New-York; who, with Mrs. Clarissa Plummer, wife of Mr. James Plummer, were, in the Spring of 1835, (with their unfortunate husbands,) taken prisoners by the Camanche tribe of Indians, while emigrating from said Franklin County (N.Y.) to Texas; and after having been made to witness the tragical deaths of their husbands, and held nearly two years in bondage, were providentially redeemed therefrom by two of their countrymen attached to a company of Santa Fe Fur Traders.

It was the misfortune of Mrs. Harris, and her unfortunate female ...
