Poetry As Theory: Lope De Vega's Epistola As Arbiter Of Proper Discourse, Mark J. Mascia
Poetry As Theory: Lope De Vega's Epistola As Arbiter Of Proper Discourse, Mark J. Mascia
Languages Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to examine the ways in which Lope de Vega manipulates epistolas to serve his own ends with regards to language, both on a narrowly literary level and on a broader personal and even national one. What emerges is an epistola which blends both the self-evident art of poetry writing and critical speculation upon it, one which Lope consciously uses as a literary mode of vindication and defense for his ideas regarding proper discourse and as an attack on any type of discourse of which he disapproves.
Every Man's An Odysseus: An Analysis Of The Nostos-Theme In Corelli's Mandolin, Emily A. Mcdermott
Every Man's An Odysseus: An Analysis Of The Nostos-Theme In Corelli's Mandolin, Emily A. Mcdermott
Classics Faculty Publication Series
In the sparkling first chapter of Louis de Bernieres's Corelli's Mandolin, the world of Homer's Odysseus is explicitly invoked. This is hardly surprising in a historical novel which will detail the Italian occupation of the Greek island of Cephallonia, near neighbor of Odysseus's Ithaca, during World War II. What is less immediately apparent is that the novel contains a further pattern of inexplicit allusion to the Odyssey, along with a pervasive theme of nostos. Emphasis on "homecoming" helps create the novel's ardent encomium to the Greek homeland that inspires such fierce love of place in its people …

Asian American Coping Attitudes, Sources, And Practices: Implications For Indigenous Counseling Strategies, Christine J. Yeh, Yu-Wei Wang
Asian American Coping Attitudes, Sources, And Practices: Implications For Indigenous Counseling Strategies, Christine J. Yeh, Yu-Wei Wang
School of Education Faculty Research
Coping attitudes, sources, and practices were assessed within and across a sample of Asian American college and graduate students from four ethnic groups: Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Indian (N = 470). We found that Asian Americans tended to endorse coping sources and practices that emphasized talking with familial and social relations rather than professionals such as counselors and doctors. Korean Americans were significantly more likely to cope with problems by engaging in religious activities. Counseling implications are discussed.

Just as Bunyan and Bedford go together, so do George MacDonald and The Pilgrim's Progress to those who are interested in the life of George MacDonald.
This lifelong connection began in MacDonald's childhood when he read and enjoyed The Pilgrim's Progress and continued through to his identification in later life with the character of 'Greatheart' by his friends.

After a lot of problems, our plans to involve the MacDonald Society in this important event are now in place, thanks to the encouragement of many people. When it seemed that cost would prevent us from having an official display/stall, the Aberdeenshire Library Service generously offered us the use of the main meeting-room at the Brander Library and Museum building in Huntly Town Square. There is a fine MacDonald display case in the Museum full of objects such as costumes from the family's performances of The Pilgrim's Progress and we hope that visitors will go on from there to visit …

An Experiment With Science For The Nineteenth- Century Book Trade: The International Scientific Series, Leslie Howsam
An Experiment With Science For The Nineteenth- Century Book Trade: The International Scientific Series, Leslie Howsam
History Publications
The theory, method and disciplinary foundations of ‘book history’ are addressed in the context of a close examination of the International Scientific Series, a set of monographs that appeared from 1871 to 1911 in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United States. Working closely with entrepreneurial publishers, most authors of ISS volumes were scientific professionals (T. H. Huxley, John Tyndall, Herbert Spencer and E. L. Youmans were among the founders) aiming to educate a broad popular audience. Commercial, scholarly and other pressures made the texts less fixed than they appear: revisions, appendices and other evidences of textual instability have …

Excerpt: "God could have made one sex, but he chose to create two distinct image-bearing creatures. Articulating conclusions about how women and men bear God's image differently is difficult, perhaps because we believe we must first figure out which differences to attribute to environment and which are knitted into our beings at conception."
