Review Of John Makeham: Lost Soul- “Confucianism” In Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2008

Review Of John Makeham: Lost Soul- “Confucianism” In Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

There is little doubt that the wounds inflicted upon the body of traditional Confucianism by the end of China’s civil service exams in 1905, the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, and the New Culture Movement that began in 1915 collectively proved fatal. With its body dead or dying, Confucians since the early twentieth century have been struggling to find a new body of practice that can host what the eminent historian Yu Ying-shih has referred to as Confucianism’s wandering soul. John Makeham’s Lost Soul: “Confucianism” in Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse is an impressive investigation of these efforts over …

Scienze Umane E Cultura Digitale, Anna Maria Tammaro, Sara Santoro

Anna Maria Tammaro

Perry, Wittgenstein's Builders And Metasemantics, Robert J. Stainton Dec 2008

Perry, Wittgenstein's Builders And Metasemantics, Robert J. Stainton

Robert J. Stainton

The paper discusses in detail John Perry’s important article “Davidson’s Sentences and Wittgenstein’s Builders”. Perry argues, on the basis of Wittgenstein’s famous block/slab language, that words make direct metasemantic contact with the world. The present paper urges that, while Perry’s conclusions are correct and important, the arguments provided for them, in his 1994 article, ignore essential features of genuine words in natural language. A more empirically-oriented alternative tactic for supporting the same philosophical conclusions is then provided, and its advantages and disadvantages are weighed.

Demanding Recognition: Equality, Respect, And Esteem, Cillian Mcbride Dec 2008

Demanding Recognition: Equality, Respect, And Esteem, Cillian Mcbride

Cillian McBride

This paper argues that we must distinguish between two distinct currents in the politics of recognition, one centred on demands for equal respect which is consistent with liberal egalitarianism, and one which centres on demands for esteem made on behalf of particular groups which is at odds with egalitarian aims. A variety of claims associated with the politics of recognition are assessed and it is argued that these are readily accommodated within contemporary liberal egalitarian theory. It is argued that, pace Taylor, much of what passes for ‘identity’ or recognition politics is driven by demands for equal respect, not by …

The Sporting Image: Sports Poetry And Creative Writing, Clive A. Palmer

Clive Palmer

This book is a collection of sports related poetry and creative writing which stemmed from a university module called The Sporting Image. Following a poetry writing workshop to help students structure their ideas and poetry writing skills an engaging degree of self-expression about sporting concepts seems to have emerged which we are proud to showcase within these pages. Many sports are featured including boxing, cricket, football and gymnastics and many issues tackled such as teamwork, comradeship, cheating, beauty and ugliness in sport. Consequently this is a varied compilation which we hope the reader will find as enjoyable to read or …

Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2008

Politeia And Arete. Archeology Of Senses And Hellenic Legacy, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

The idea of the Republic and its value is again the order of the day, not only due to Neorepublican theorists, but also because of many current debates, such as multiculturalism, the laicity of states and societies, transparency and corruption, etc. Along with Republican constitutional rules, principles and values, some proclaimed during the French Revolution (such as Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité), the debate shows the importance of an even deeper question: the importance of virtues, and the Greek legacy of Republican virtues. In this paper, among other points, we remember Pericles’ funereal speech in Thucydides’ History of Peloponnesian War, and some …

The Physics Of The Healing - Book I & Ii, Jon Mcginnis Dec 2008

The Physics Of The Healing - Book I & Ii, Jon Mcginnis

Jon McGinnis

Avicenna’s Physics is the very first volume that he wrote when he began his monumental encyclopedia of science and philosophy, The Healing. Avicenna’s reasons for beginning with Physics are numerous: it offers up the principles needed to understand such special natural sciences as psychology; it sets up many of the problems that take center stage in his Metaphysics; and it provides concrete examples of many of the abstract analytical tools that he would develop later in Logic. While Avicenna’s Physics roughly follows the thought of Aristotle’s Physics, with its emphasis on natural causes, the nature of motion, and the conditions necessary …

Haunted By History's Ghostly Gaps: A Literary Critique Of The Dred Scott Decision And Its Historical Treatments, Allen P. Mendenhall Dec 2008

Haunted By History's Ghostly Gaps: A Literary Critique Of The Dred Scott Decision And Its Historical Treatments, Allen P. Mendenhall

Allen Mendenhall

In his opinion for the majority, Chief Justice Roger B. Taney eliminates Dred Scott the man from the text and divests Scott of a body, thereby transforming him into a sort of incorporeal ghost that signals the traces and tropes of slavery. Subsequent historians, journalists, and politicians have made Scott even more inaccessible by either relying on Taney’s text, which erases Scott, or by failing to recover Scott’s narrative. Taney’s opinion codified “the facts” of the case as official or authoritative despite a lack of reference to their human subject. Later writers relied on this received version despite its obvious …
