East African Perspectives Of Family And Community, And How They Can Inform Western Ecclesiology, Ben Strait
East African Perspectives Of Family And Community, And How They Can Inform Western Ecclesiology, Ben Strait
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Research into the daily lives of East Africans is either outdated or too narrowly focused. This presentation is the result of field research done in East Africa, especially focusing on how East Africans view and practice family and community living. It answers the questions of: What is "family" to an East African? What does community living look like in East Africa? And how can Westerners apply these intercultural ideas in practical ways?

Can The Holy Grail Teach Us About Holiness?, Karen Knudson
Scholar Week 2016 - present
In Malory's Tale of the Sankgreal, Galahad is presented as a knight who, as part of a magus tradition, is unique to history, with singular, supernatural traits as he completes the quest for the Holy Grail, but who, as part of another tradition, is also presented as a pilgrim in whose footsteps the earnest, Christian knight can follow and learn. Through the narrative of medieval romance, the pilgrim Galahad illuminates the path from practical wisdom, through disengagement with worldly realities, to ultimate union with Christ.

In the summer of 2005, people living in the residential areas surrounding the Gulf of Mexico would have their lives changed forever. Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, resulting in over 1,000 fatalities and displacing millions of others. The category 5 major hurricane is recorded as one of the costliest and deadliest storms in United States history. While many are at a loss for words at such a devastation, one common question is echoed from the mouths of those in disbelief: “Where was God?” “Why did this happen?” “Why didn’t he prevent this from happening?” It seems common for humanity …

Origin Of Bay Area Hip Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
Origin Of Bay Area Hip Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
There is minimal scholarly research on the origin story of Bay Area hip hop, despite various articles and books by hip hop experts and artists. The overall viewpoint that emerges from secondary literature is that hip hop originated on the East Coast and eventually emerged on the West Coast with it’s own unique style. These accounts, while well researched only include a few mainstream figures and styles related to the Los Angeles hip hop scene. Looking past mainstream hip hop, this study pieces together the origins of Bay Area hip hop through both mainstream and underground key figures of the …

Capriccio For Mixed Ensemble And Piano, André Mcevenue
Capriccio For Mixed Ensemble And Piano, André Mcevenue
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Capriccio is a 12 minute, single movement “mini concerto” for piano and small chamber ensemble. The music is of a virtuosic and capricious nature; at times it is dance-like and rhapsodic, at others, pensive and introspective. The formal construction concerns the techniques of fragmentation and pitch symmetry. My interest in these techniques is informed from the study of works by Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók. Therefore, the title is reminiscent of Stravinsky’s own work, Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. In my piece, a symmetrical pitch collection is used as the main musical material. Small repeating fragments of this collection …

Community Engagement Celebration Day
Rod Library’s Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is a concerted effort to improve the representation of women and minoritized individuals in the arts on the free encyclopedia and in the Wikipedia community. Wikipedia is the fifth most used website in the world, but there is systemic bias embedded in its content due to a lack of diversity. This project is an effort to change that. Students in LIB 3159: Creating Wikipedia for the Arts hosted the Edit-a-thon on March 24. The event was free and open to the public. In addition to community participants, students in ARTHIST 4608: Arts of Africa (who …
The Old House, Eric Swiatoschik
The Old House, Eric Swiatoschik
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Old House is a programmatic children's suite in four movements based on a short story of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The story is about a young boy who befriends a man who lives in an old house on his street. The narrative of the music focuses on the beginning of the story when the boy enters the house for the first time with each movement musically depicting something the boy sees. The piece utilizes straightforward programmatic elements in conjunction with Neo-Romantic harmonic and melodic content to appeal to younger audiences (children), while still maintaining the same …

Sacred Sounds: A Compassionate Listening Guide To Musical Worship, Madison Blonquist
Sacred Sounds: A Compassionate Listening Guide To Musical Worship, Madison Blonquist
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Sacred Sounds was a collaborative, multimedia exhibition that showed in the Brigham Young University Harold B. Lee Library Level 1 Gallery from November 10, 2017-February 2, 2018. Its primary objective was to cultivate empathy among the three Abrahamic religions through the lens of music. While this project may communicate the overall vision of the curator, it was deeply collaborative and involved the creative contributions from several campus departments and drew upon the insights of leaders from local congregations. The following documentation is a portfolio of the exhibition space and its public reception. This project was made possible with generous funding …
Knock-Knock! Whose Peer? The Epistemic Significance Of Humor, Kaci Harrison
Knock-Knock! Whose Peer? The Epistemic Significance Of Humor, Kaci Harrison
Theses
Debates about the epistemic significance of peer disagreement are highly idealized. Some have even suggested that genuine cases of epistemic peer disagreement never in fact obtain, since even seemingly trivial differences in experience and attitudes can bias evidential processing. This thesis defends the view that these criticisms are overstated: the problem is not that epistemic peer disagreements do not exist, but rather that we lack an account of how it is possible to identify our epistemic peers. I argue that attention to the sense of humor provides one important source of evidence regarding the experiences and attitudes of others that …

Esta Breve Tragedia De La Carne, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2017-2018 Women Innovators in the Performing Arts
With Esta Breve Tragedia de la Carne (This Brief Tragedy of the Flesh), Peak Performances introduces audiences to the singular work of the confrontational Spanish writer, director and performance artist Angélica Liddell. All the major European festivals – d’Avignon and d’Automne in France, Vie in Italy, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in Switzerland – embrace Liddell with the adoration usually reserved for Romeo Castellucci and Robert Wilson. Esta Breve Tragedia epitomizes her willingness to put herself and her performers through intense physical challenges to explore politics and the human condition. Here she immerses herself in Emily Dickinson, who spent much of her life …

Coming Of Age In The Disciplinary Structures Of The Catholic Church: Power And Discipline In A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man And The Land Of Spices, Rebecca Beaulieu
Coming Of Age In The Disciplinary Structures Of The Catholic Church: Power And Discipline In A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man And The Land Of Spices, Rebecca Beaulieu
The Criterion
Coming of age in Ireland carries with it cultural and religious expectations drawn out from the history of Nationalism and the Catholic Church in Ireland. Using Michel Foucault’s theories on punishment and discipline, this essay looks at the way the Irish Catholic Church forms identity and conflict in characters from two different stories. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce and The Land of Spices by Kate O’Brien depict the coming-of-age of two main characters struggling to create their own identity in a strict Irish Catholic Culture. Though each of the characters grow and change …

Ten Years Later: A Reply To A Reply From David Haugen And Bryant Keeling; Concerning Charles Hartshorne's Neoclassical Theology And Big Bang Cosmology, Theodore Walker
Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events
In the Fall 1993 issue of the journal Process Studies, David Haugen and L. Bryant Keeling offered a criticism of Charles Hartshorne’s neoclassical theology. In the same issue, this criticism was followed by Hartshorne’s less than one-page response, a response Theodore Walker judged to be seriously inadequate. In the Fall-Winter 2006 issue of Process Studies, Walker offered a neoclassical response to the Haugen-Keeling-Hartshorne discussion. In the Spring-Summer 2008 issue of Process Studies, Haugen and Keeling offered a reply to Walker. Ten years later, in April 2018, Walker offers this reply to the Haugen-Keeling reply.

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project: Report Of The 2003 Season, Nicholas K. Rauh
Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011
The Rough Cilicia Survey Team was investigating the role of Rough Cilicia as a production region to the ancient Roman Mediterranean economy. Our investigative methods in the 2003 season included remote sensing of satellite imagery; surface, geomorphological, and maritime survey; charcoal analysis of ceramic production residue for timber identification; and biogeochemical analysis of regional terrestrial vegetation preserved in sediments. The project team identified crucial indicators of economic production activities associated with the renewable resource of timber (particularly cedar) from Cilician mountain forests. To refine this question, the project was examining the basin of the Biçkici River (modern Gazipaşa, Turkey) as …

The monthly concert series, Listen in the Library, featured student performers in library spaces on the Logan campus. These short, pop-up concerts were one of the ways the USU Libraries was involved in USU’s “Year of the Arts” in 2017-2018. While the library regularly features students’ visual art and exhibits, Listen in the Library brought the performing arts into the space, making student accomplishments in music audible and visible to a community outside the concert hall.

The Parallels Between Art Therapy And Christianity: Integrating Identities As A Christian And An Art Therapist, Kendal Hansen
The Parallels Between Art Therapy And Christianity: Integrating Identities As A Christian And An Art Therapist, Kendal Hansen
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Therapists knowledge of their personal beliefs is extremely beneficial to individual’s working in the field of art therapy. Therapists are better able to serve their clients when they have a clear understanding of themselves and their biases. The writer of this thesis identifies strongly as an art therapist and as a Christian. To better understand how the two strongest parts of her identity integrated, this thesis explored the parallels between Christianity and art therapy by reviewing the literature and facilitating an arts-based qualitative study. The literature suggested that art therapy can be effective with various populations within the Christian category. …
