Not To Teach Any Different Doctrine: Examining The Doctrines Of The Early Latter-Day Saints Movement And The Church Fathers, Jacob D. Hayden
Not To Teach Any Different Doctrine: Examining The Doctrines Of The Early Latter-Day Saints Movement And The Church Fathers, Jacob D. Hayden
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Explanations of the nature of humanity, God, and the purpose of life have a direct influence on the daily lives of the adherents of a given religious tradition. In the early third century, Origen of Alexandria proposed doctrines of preexistence, subordinationism, and theosis, which were dismissed in the early Church to various degrees. Some sixteen hundred years later, members of the upstart Latter-day Saints movement, such as Orson Pratt, would maintain strikingly similar positions about the nature of the soul, the godhead, and the final cause of humanity. These concepts represent essential aspects of the worldviews of these traditions; …

My War And What Came After, Jesus Lopez
My War And What Came After, Jesus Lopez
Theses and Dissertations
My War and What Came After is a memoir that explores my personal experience with modern military life. It is my primary purpose to connect the military world with the world of writing. I am the guy that was willing to put everything on the line, including my life to become an English professor. The memoir is a detailed account of my adult life but also a coming of age experience and a successful ambitious plan to achieve my educational ambitions. It was an extreme and maybe even a crazy decision but calculated enough that it worked. It could have …

Divided By A Common Language: A Comparative Study Of University Bilingual Language Policy In The Utrgv Texas And The Upf Barcelona, Shaun Mccrory
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the world, language usage is an arena of conflict and resistance. States, institutions, civil society and individuals all impact on language policy in education but the literature has paid scant attention to the specific issue of tertiary education and language planning. My two case studies - the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Catalonia and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Texas, USA - provide a comparison of an established bilingual university and an emerging bilingual university. Both face similar problems regarding language usage but both face unique and idiosyncratic differences. The issue under scrutiny in this thesis …

Samuel Adams And John Hancock: The Relationship That Determined The Formation Of America, Bruce D. Griffiths
Theses and Dissertations
This paper argues that the relationship between Samuel Adams and John Hancock and their cooperation played critical/pivotal roles, especially in garnering New England support for the beginning of the American Revolution as well as the ratification of the Constitution.
Poison And Monsters, Jiovanna L. Perez
Poison And Monsters, Jiovanna L. Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Poison and Monsters is a collection of stories that follow the same protagonist, Jiovanna, as she navigates friendships, love, loss, and hallucinations. It is a commentary on mental health and the impact that pain medication, lack of sleep, and loneliness can have on a person. Jiovanna draws on the support and understanding of her best friends, Juan and Danielle, and in one instance a rowdy raccoon to help her find her way through the Darkness that surrounds her. Insomnia, migraines, and heartache tie these four stories together, but they can also be read as standalone pieces that give a small …
Please Be A Gatsby, Gabriel Jorge Torres
Please Be A Gatsby, Gabriel Jorge Torres
Theses and Dissertations
I use my position as a high school English teacher to teach the following books: The Metamorphosis, The Stranger, Fahrenheit 451, The Great Gatsby, selected poetry by Housman and Hardy, Lysistrata , short stories by Ernest Hemingway, and the Catcher in the Rye. These literary classics have accompanied me in my growth as a scholar and individual and comprise the major works I teach as a high school teacher. I have blended sketches of my life with these works of literature to create small narratives about the way I inspire my students to be like the characters they …
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Medication Abuse At The University Of Arkansas, Morgan Mutti
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Medication Abuse At The University Of Arkansas, Morgan Mutti
Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
When a student enters the University of Arkansas, ADHD medications are frequently introduced and classified by students as a common aid for studying. Because the University does not have a specific program to inform and warn students about the consequences of ADHD medication abuse, students who are new to the vigorous demands of college can easily start inadvertently taking the medication.
To further knowledge on ADHD medication abuse at the University of Arkansas and its effects, a student research study was conducted. This study includes the history of ADHD as well as brief inspections of current studies on Attention Deficit …
Re-Making The Mark, Zora Murff
Re-Making The Mark, Zora Murff
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Is there a difference between a Black body lynched in 1919 and the forced removal of a community through the construction of a freeway? Or a blighted landscape shaped through generations of segregationist legislation versus a Black life taken by police in 2018? With Re-Making The Mark, I produce a mixture imagery and history to prompt inquiry into not only how racial violence has been recorded through images, but how they can also become a subversive code to interrupt collective belief. I capitalize on photography’s capacity to reveal temporal layers, and my work reinterprets American narratives about power, race, and …
Between Global And Local: Geometric Patterns Of Gallic Roman Mosaics, Rebecca Salem
Between Global And Local: Geometric Patterns Of Gallic Roman Mosaics, Rebecca Salem
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
It is often assumed that mosaicists working in different parts of the Roman Empire utilized specific repertoires of geometric patterns, specific to that locality, which formed distinct regional styles. Accordingly, scholarship has sought to assign particular layouts and ornamentation to different areas around the Empire: illusionistic patterns mimicking architectural elements such as coffering in the Eastern Roman Empire, black and white scenes of imagery with no geometric designs in central Italy, and large figural scenes bordered with geometric patterns in North Africa. But this existing model of regional difference does not explain the similarities that can also be seen. For …

8scenes, Spencer G. Perkins
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Creative Work, and Performance
This work explores the juxtaposition of a live ensemble, and pre-collected field recordings. The material for the ensemble is divided into eight sections, or “scenes,” which unfold one after the other without pause, at times blending musical material to where it is unclear when the music has transitioned to the next section. The field recordings are divided into three main sections, which are defined by the underlying loop as follows: “sunny day recording”; “people talking recording”; and “rainy day recording.” Atop these structural loops, it is the responsibility of the “electronics player” to que other recordings in a manner that …

The Earliest Surviving Version Of Charles Chesnutt's "Rena Walden," The Short Story That Became "The House Behind The Cedars", Dominic Yarabe
Honors Theses
My research project presents an edited version, with an introduction, of the earliest surviving version of “Rena Walden,” the short story that ultimately became the novel The House Behind the Cedars. The novel is a passing story in which a light-skinned, mixed race girl enters white society to live life as a white woman. Interestingly, however, the short story on which the novel was based began as a fiction with no white characters whatsoever. As the manuscript of this story is often difficult to read because of hard-to-decipher handwritten revisions, I had to create my own editorial policy to …
Fanfiction As A Form With Merit, Alyssandra Holmes
Fanfiction As A Form With Merit, Alyssandra Holmes
Honors Theses
Fanfiction is a form of writing with a vast wealth of merits, and it should be respected as a unique and valuable literary genre. I have read a number of scholarly articles written regarding fanfiction, analyzed certain works and my own experiences within the fan community, and considered original media in order to construct my defense of fanfiction's value as a literary form. Fanfiction has an unfortunately poor reputation, given the unique advantages it provides to authors. Fanfiction is an egalitarian learning tool, with a thriving community and a significant impact upon the individuals engaging with fanfiction creation. Fanfiction is …
Middle Eastern Themes In Contemporary American Fantasy: The Political And Socio-Religious Implications, Sait Ibisi
Middle Eastern Themes In Contemporary American Fantasy: The Political And Socio-Religious Implications, Sait Ibisi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
What follows is a Master’s Thesis in which an insight is given into four Middle East-inspired contemporary American fantasy novels: The Desert of Souls (2011) by Howard Andrew Jones, Throne of the Crescent Moon (2012) by Saladin Ahmed, The City of Brass (2017) by S. A. Chakraborty, and Alif the Unseen (2012) by G. Willow Wilson. In the first part of the thesis I disclose the political implications which the mentioned novels carry. These are inspired by the past and contemporary political developments in the Middle East, and are meant to both criticize the said, but more importantly, to depict …
Best Practice: Bringing The Elements Of Effective Practice To The College Writing Classroom, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Best Practice: Bringing The Elements Of Effective Practice To The College Writing Classroom, Jonathan Montgomery Green
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studies of college writing students suggest that many students associate writing ability with innate talent rather than sustained, deliberate practice. As a result, these students may lack the motivation to improve their writing abilities, leading to a vicious cycle in which they come to increasingly resent writing as a curricular and extracurricular activity. This dissertation argues that the elements of effective practice as outlined by cognitive psychology are equally applicable to writing as they are to skills such as music and that convincing students of the “practice-ability” of writing may improve their motivation to improve their writing abilities.
The dissertation …

As an observational-style documentary film, all scientific background information imparted herein is taken directly from interviews conducted with Professor Covington, to minimize opining.
The film begins in mid-flight, as …
Tuba Concerto In D Minor, Eric Dreggors
Tuba Concerto In D Minor, Eric Dreggors
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Writing the Tuba Concerto in D minor was a long and tedious process that required help and inspiration from many different people. The process began with a suggestion from a friend to write a tuba concerto for him, and soon progressed into a thesis. Since only one tuba concerto exists in the standard repertoire (the concerto by Ralphe Vaughan-Williams), the challenge to create a new concerto was very powerful.
Eleven minutes long, it is much shorter than the average concerto, but only a minute or two behind the Vaughan-Williams concerto. The first movement, the Prelude, is made to sound just …

Gothic Voids: Nineteenth-Century Reader Experience And Participation, Garrett Chapman Jeter
Gothic Voids: Nineteenth-Century Reader Experience And Participation, Garrett Chapman Jeter
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Characterization of nineteenth-century literary Gothic is usually confined to affective response. This project argues that literary Gothic works constitute an intellectual, empirical endeavor. Because authors of literary Gothic intentionally left voids in their narratives, they invited their readers to participate in making narrative through speculation and conjecture about missing information. The practice of Gothic reading makes the reader an active partaker in filling those voids with rational conclusions. Reading is not just textual encounter. Rather, it incorporates making meaning of one’s surroundings. In their experiences, literary works’ characters “read” their environments: people, objects, events, etc. Chapter 1 characterizes Gothic reading …

Landscapes Of Recovery: Belonging And Place In Post-Katrina Literatures, Lee Martin Abbott
Landscapes Of Recovery: Belonging And Place In Post-Katrina Literatures, Lee Martin Abbott
Theses and Dissertations
In Landscapes of Recovery: Belonging and Place in Post-Katrina Literatures, I analyze narratives of physical and social change following the events of Hurricane Katrina while providing a critical reading of the representations of New Orleans’s and the Gulf Coast’s urban landscapes in works of urban planning, nonfiction literature, and activist writing. A general line of inquiry informs this project: how do narratives about the disaster landscape following Katrina make visible or invisible certain political subjects? I assert that, by telling stories about the post- and pre-disaster landscape and its urban development history, these narratives carry out the process of displacement. …

"We'll Get Through This Together": Fan Cultures And Mediated Social Support On Amc's Talking Dead, Jeremy Vincent Adolphson
Theses and Dissertations
In this rhetorical analysis, the role of fandom through the technological advances in new media communication and its impact on social media are examined. Specifically, I analyze the rhetorical strategies that individuals use online in order to create narratives reaffirming their own conceptualizations of what it means to be a fan. This dissertation explores how changes in our contemporary media landscape has afforded a new space in popular culture, particularly the television genre of the Live After Show, which is specifically geared towards fans gaining public momentum, while highlighting the productive and performative elements of fan labor. The primary texts …
Fracaso Y Frustracion Sexual En La Obra Cuentistica De Julio Ramon Ribeyro, Arcadio Bolanos
Fracaso Y Frustracion Sexual En La Obra Cuentistica De Julio Ramon Ribeyro, Arcadio Bolanos
Theses and Dissertations
In the short stories of Peruvian writer Julio Ramón Ribeyro, there are two important subjects that are mutually connected and are part of a larger literary proposal: failure and sexual frustration. When Ribeyro wrote his short stories, he was portraying the Peruvian reality and the idiosyncrasy of Peruvians in general. Certainly, failure has often been associated with Ribeyro’s literary proposals, as most of his characters fail in one way or another; however, little has been said about sexual frustration, which is quite an important thematic element that should not be overlooked. The theoretical framework relies mostly on psychoanalysis, including Jacques …
El Fenómeno Patria, De Fernando Aramburu: Una Nueva Narrativa En Torno Al Terrorismo Vasco, Ana María Casas Olcoz
El Fenómeno Patria, De Fernando Aramburu: Una Nueva Narrativa En Torno Al Terrorismo Vasco, Ana María Casas Olcoz
Theses and Dissertations
A Distinction Between Expectations And Demands: Towards A Wider Conception Of Accountability, Christiana Eltiste
A Distinction Between Expectations And Demands: Towards A Wider Conception Of Accountability, Christiana Eltiste
Theses and Dissertations
In the literature on responsibility and blame, ‘expectations’ and ‘demands’ are often used interchangeably. Specifically, R. Jay Wallace construes expectations and demands as equivalent ways of expressing strict prohibitions or requirements. However, expectations and demands are not identical concepts and treating them as such glosses over important nuance. By using these concepts synonymously, Wallace is unable to account for how we blame and hold others responsible for actions that do not violate strict prohibitions or requirements, actions that are merely considered morally bad. In this paper I explore the distinction between expectations and demands and how ignoring this distinction ultimately …
Conceiving As Evidence Of Possibility, Benjamin Faltesek
Conceiving As Evidence Of Possibility, Benjamin Faltesek
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I argue that at least one type of conceiving, namely imagining, provides reliable
evidence of non-actual metaphysical possibility. My argument requires two main tasks. I need to
show that conceiving can provide evidence at all of mere (non-actual) metaphysical possibilities.
To put it another way, how could what we imagine or otherwise conceive stand in any
representational relation whatsoever to a mere possibility? I argue by analogy with perception
that the contents of our imaginings correspond with (some) merely possible states of affairs.
Imagination is not perception of merely possible objects, of course. If one imagines that …
The Activity Of Finite Spirits In Berkeley: Willing Sensible Ideas, Benjamin Quinn Formanek
The Activity Of Finite Spirits In Berkeley: Willing Sensible Ideas, Benjamin Quinn Formanek
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout his unpublished and published works alike, George Berkeley repeatedly exclaims that finite spirits have the power to move our bodies by acts of volition. However, given the nature of the way in which Berkeley carves the division between objective and subjective experience, his remarks concerning our agency over our bodies in the real world appear inconsistent. In an attempt to exculpate Berkeley from inconsistency, Sukjae Lee and George Pitcher offer up an occasionalist interpretation of Berkeley. Their account situates finite spirits with agency that extends to producing acts of will which either serve as occasions for God to then …
Reactive Attitudes & The Value Of Responsibility, Andrew Lichter
Reactive Attitudes & The Value Of Responsibility, Andrew Lichter
Theses and Dissertations
This paper argues against the family of “reactive accounts” of moral responsibility. On such accounts, which take their cue from P.F. Strawson’s influential “Freedom and Resentment,” being morally responsible is properly understood in terms of being held responsible, which in turn is properly understood in terms of a set of moral emotions and their associated practices. This way of understanding responsibility re-frames apparently metaphysical questions about whether we are responsible in normative terms, as questions about whether and why these practices are permissible or required. I argue that we are responsible because we in some sense affirm the value of …
