Melanchthon The Theologian, Robert D. Preus

It would seem impossible that the theme "Melanchthon the Theologian," which is as comprehensive as it is indefinite, could be discussed satisfactorily in any brief presentation. The actual purpose and scope of this study is, however, narrower than the rather general theme might indicate. I propose to consider Melanchthon’s contributions to that discipline which is now known as dogmatics, to trace the impact of his systematic bent upon Lutheran theology, to delineate some of his main ideas on theology, and thus to assess him as a theologian.

The treatise offered here seeks to extract and delineate, from three leading figures of the Reformation period, three basic attitudes toward the use of force and violence which have been, and continue to be, assumed by the followers of Jesus Christ. When Constantine first raised the Christian banner in front of his armies he was already tending in the direction of the first position exemplified most clearly in the career and theology of Thomas Muentzcr.

By examining this decision in the light of events which led to its formulation as well as in the light of its subsequent fate, we shall be introduced to an issue which has become very much alive in both Roman Catholic and Protestant thought.

Because of the central place which the Confessions give to the doctrine of justification we feel that we can do nothing less than make this doctrine the unifying principle in this thesis. We do so for this reason that the unifying principle or a Lutheran philosophy of education cannot be much diverse from the material principle of its theology. If theology is the basis or the foundation upon which the superstructure of a Lutheran philosophy of education can be built up, then the two and their unifying principles are more closely related than we might assume.

The unity of Scripture is an article of faith. This unity is also an objective fact that exists apart from faith and does not become a fact merely when I believe it (existentialist theology). But it is more than an arithmetic problem. It is not a mere unit sum at which we arrive by adding a number of given parts and fractions into a whole. This means that it is more than the addition of demonstrable facts and figures.

This present study is concerned with the last-named work and grew out of long pre-occupation with the task of producing an English version. The importance of Schlink's book has been widely recognized in Lutheran circles. To make it available to additional thousands of English-speaking Lutherans who are not able to make full use of the material in its original German, the work of translation was begun by the late Paul F. Koehneke of Milwaukee, and after his death, carried forward to completion by the present writer.

The doctrine of reconciliation is among the last subjects Barth has spoken on. This doctrine is presented in Vol. IV of his Church Dogmatics and embraces three parts. In Barth's dogmatics reconciliation includes not only the doctrine of the atonement and justification but also the work and person of Christ and the application of salvation (conversion and sanctification).

In a former article I pointed out by way of introduction that Karl Barth by his raking cognizance of both exegesis and church history ranks rightfully above most of his contemporaries as a dogmatician of stature. In spite of their preoccupation with preaching most pastors are not particularly interested in books about preaching. Sermon books are more promising. They can offer valuable ideas, give a few practical hints now and then, present a stimulating model, and not infrequently suggest an outline to the harried pastor. But a book on homiletics at best seems to promise a review of those principles which every seminary graduate ought to know. If he no longer remembers them, they probably were not very helpful anyway. After all, one learns to preach by preaching.
